Exploring Life & Business with Sapana Prajapati of Lice Lifters of Travis County

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sapana Prajapati.

Hi Sapana, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I’m a first-generation American, and my story really started with my parents, who came to this country with very little but a strong belief in education, hard work, and creating opportunities for the next generation.

I built my career in forensic science and spent more than 15 years working as a forensic DNA scientist, eventually becoming a Senior Forensic Scientist. I loved the science, the problem-solving, and knowing that my work could make a real difference in people’s lives. But after many years in the forensic field, I realized I was ready for a new challenge, something where I could build something of my own and have a more direct impact on people in my community.

That led me to entrepreneurship and ultimately to opening Lice Lifters of Travis County. It was a big leap from analyzing DNA in a laboratory to owning and operating a business, but I’ve found that many of the skills I developed as a scientist, attention to detail, problem-solving, staying calm under pressure, and caring deeply about getting things right, have translated surprisingly well.

Today, I’m a business owner, a mom, and someone who is growing a company. My journey has been a reminder that your career doesn’t have to follow a straight line. Sometimes the experiences you’ve had along the way prepare you for something you never imagined you would do.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Definitely not. There have been a lot of challenges along the way, and I think some of the hardest moments have also been the most valuable. Going from a very structured career in forensic science, where I knew exactly what I was doing, to becoming a business owner meant learning an entirely new world—marketing, finances, employees, sales, and all the day-to-day decisions that come with being responsible for your own business. There have been plenty of moments of self-doubt and times when I’ve questioned whether I made the right decision, but I’ve learned to trust myself, keep moving forward, and remember that growth rarely happens when everything is easy.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Lice Lifters of Travis County?
Lice Lifters of Travis County is a professional, family-focused lice treatment center serving families throughout the Lakeway and greater Austin area. We specialize in professional head checks, pesticide-free treatments, and thorough, meticulous comb-outs. What really sets us apart is our personalized approach, we take the time to understand each family’s situation and create an individualized treatment and follow-up plan rather than taking a one-size-fits-all approach. Our private, discreet treatment suites also give families a comfortable place to get help without feeling embarrassed or exposed.

We’re also very focused on education. Lice can be incredibly stressful, especially when parents are trying to treat it at home and aren’t sure if they’ve actually removed everything. I’ve personally experienced that frustration, which is one of the reasons I wanted to create a resource where families could get professional help, accurate information, and a clear plan. We educate families throughout the treatment process and discuss prevention techniques, household management, and what they can do to reduce the chances of dealing with lice again.

My professional background also plays a big role in how I approach the business. Before becoming an entrepreneur, I spent more than 15 years as a forensic DNA scientist, and I still work as a DNA expert and testify in court. That scientific background has made me extremely detail-oriented and evidence-minded, and I bring that same level of precision to lice treatment. I’m most proud of building a brand that families can trust, not just to remove lice, but to educate, support, and give them confidence throughout the entire process.

Who else deserves credit in your story?
I have been incredibly fortunate to have so many people in my corner throughout this journey. My friends have truly been some of my biggest cheerleaders. They believed in me, encouraged me to take the leap into entrepreneurship, celebrated the wins, and were there to remind me to keep going when things felt overwhelming. Their support has meant more than they probably realize.

My daughter has also played a very special role in the business. She has been involved from the beginning and helps me run things behind the scenes. Building this business has become something we get to experience together, and I love that she gets to see firsthand what it means to work hard, take a risk, and build something of your own.

And then there is my family, who quite literally helped me build this place. From putting the space together to helping with all the little details that went into opening the doors, they were there. This business may have my name on it, but it truly took a village to bring it to life. I am incredibly grateful for the people who have supported me, believed in my vision, and helped make Lice Lifters of Travis County what it is today.
