Today we’d like to introduce you to Allison Wojtowecz.
Hi Allison, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I was born in Austin and raised in Round Rock, and have lived here my entire life. I spent my childhood in theatre productions through school and outside of it, singing, dancing, and playing music.
After high school, I went on to attend The University of Texas at Austin and received a B.A. in Acting and a B.S. in Kinesiology.
I was hired for a production called Sh*t Faced-Shakespeare shortly after this, and my directors wanted me to “loosen up” for the show. I decided this meant I needed to try standup comedy.
Standup was the most terrifying and fun thing I’d ever done on stage, and I was hooked after just a few open mics. Now, I perform standup regularly across Austin (and the world), produce Litty Titty Thursdays at The Creek and the Cave in downtown Austin, and regularly create sketches and short films with friends in town.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Absolutely not, and anyone who tells you that there’s an easy path to anything is selling you snake oil.
There was one point where I was working 3 jobs and still asking my parents to help. You’re fighting sleep deprivation, stress, and the desire to stay creative within it all.
Making money at art is always challenging, and there are still ebbs and flows to it. Learning what works and what doesn’t is crucial, and I would say one of my BIGGEST lessons so far is that if I don’t take myself seriously, why should anyone else?
Treating my art like it’s a business (because if I want to make money at it, that’s what it is) was a huge mindset shift for me and has since helped me to do more art.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m a standup comedian and actress who’s also very good at marketing, which helps to make me a solid event producer, too.
Some of my specialties (besides the art) include providing a great audience for comedians and artists to perform in front of, as well as keeping the shows running smoothly – you’d be shocked at how little organization goes into many events, and it shows in how poorly they end up running. I love putting something on to get the feedback afterwards that it “flowed really well.”
One other stand-out is that my show, Litty Titty Thursdays at The Creek and The Cave, is the only gong show in Austin. Audience gets to determine whether they like a performer or not and if not, we hit a gong to get them off stage faster than their booked time. It’s a ton of fun and creates a great blend of audience participation and crowd work for the comedians.
What was your favorite childhood memory?
It’s more like a compilation of memories – going into nature with my mom to find pretty things, or to go hunting and fishing with my dad.
