Exploring Life & Business with Angel Suarez Moreno of Eastar Companies

Today we’d like to introduce you to Angel Suarez Moreno.

Hi Angel , we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
My story begins in Carolina, Puerto Rico. After college, I moved to the U.S. mainland to support my Mother’s business. When I arrived, I had no English skills, but I taught myself language through Spanish TV (I used to work as a valet). I was determined, and in a not too distant future I was a hotel manager. Working in the hospitality industry taught me so much. I also chased my dream and in parallel launched a service offering transport for clients via airplanes.

Eventually, I was determined to offer my family better long-term stability. I transitioned to banking. Unfortunately, a major financial setback occurred after my insurance policy lapsed, and I saw my clients lose their investments. I then made it my mission to avoid this situation from happening to other people, which is why I decided to move to insurance. I left banking, started EASTAR Insurance Group, got licensed, and created my insurance agency. It was scrap start, with just my family working in shifts behind the desks, and two laptops. The grit and support from my family grew the business across multiple states.

My determination to change lives through my knowledge base grew passion stronger then ever. I got my real estate and business administration degree to facilitate the growth of my business and Real Estate ventures.

Creative Arts & Filmmaking: Started both Suarrez Films and Eastar Music Global, where he was able to direct, write, and produce projects like Hispanglish and Travel With An Accent to bring different cultures to the forefront.

Community Service: Elected to City Council in Live Oak, Texas, and engaged with local community efforts.

Eastar now operates in insurance, real estate, technology, freight logistics, and film distribution. It started as a new and difficult beginning in a new country and a new language. It was eventually built on resilience and faith with the undying support of my family and friends.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It ‘s definitely been a difficult journey, and there were several major challenges along the way that put my determination to the test:

No English & First of Many Struggles: One of the initial large challenges was moving to the U.S. without English. Learning English by reading the closed captions on TV and working the hospitality industry took a lot of time and effort.

Family Caregiving & Responsibilities: Taking care of an entire family while having long work hours was stressful, but so was being the primary care provider for both my great grandmother and my grandmother.

The Devastating Setback that Inspired My Direction: Though a positive thing in the long run, a severe windstorm destroyed my Cessna and I had a car accident on the way to survey the damage. I had a total loss on all fronts and I lost my vehicle, and on top of that my insurance lapsed a week before the incident. It helped motivate me to learn insurance extensively and to help others avoid significant income insurance losses; I built Eastar.

Launching A Business of My Own: Starting Eastar Insurance Group, I launched with next to nothing. The first office was two desks and two computers, operated by family taking shifts to use their free time to help the business until it gained traction.

Every one of my personality challenges — caregiving, language gaps, and financial setbacks — has taught me hard lessons and helped me develop the capability to adapt and succeed in all of life’s contingencies.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?

Brand Pride: I most appreciate having built a multi-dimensional organization from the ground up that involves my family and a strong work ethic. We began with two desks and two laptops and today have an operation that meets everyday client needs as well as services the advanced demands of our commercial clients.

First and foremost, we would like our readers to understand that while Eastar has the capacity of an enterprise, we are a small business at heart. We provide integrity, resilience, and personal care.

Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
Being born was a miracle in and of itself considering my parents divorced before I was born, and I was an unplanned baby. Doctors thought my mother had a tumor, and she was even given medication to dissolve it. Defying the odds, I was born. I also had severe infant jaundice and clubbed feet so I had to walk in heavy corrective shoes.

I grew up in a low-income neighborhood where there was an expectation to work hard. My parents worked hard to make ends meet while we worked equally hard to study. We had no financial security whatsoever, so we moved multiple times to different cities to live in different places. That meant a different school for me every time. Although it was exciting to be the new kid for a short time, it made my peers pick on me because they were mad it took focus away from them.

Having physical disabilities along with the fact I moved a lot and had no choice but to deal with the hardships of being poor, made me harden my character to the world, which taught me grit and faith to pull through every hardships that I have had to face since.
