Today we’d like to introduce you to James Ramm.
Hi James, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I moved to Austin 11 years ago when I was 18. Originally I started going to college for Business. After 2 years, I decided I wouldnt be happy long term. I had always done my friends and family’s hair in high school and thought I would give cosmetology school a try. Instantly knew it was a better fit and to this day have zero regrets about pivoting my career path. Once I completed school, went through an Apprenticeship, I knew my dream was to specialize is Haircuts. A fee years later I found myself in a specialized salon where I could join a cutting team. I focused on cutting and natural hair textures. Even working at a curly salon for a while and furthering my education in natural textures. Now I work as a Haircut Specialist at Deep Roots Salon ATX. I focus on natural textures and lived in cuts that last.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It was not a smooth road. I ended up breaking my thumb in the middle of cosmetology school and had to take a 3 month leave of absence. Then upon graduating, I didnt pass my state boards the first time. I had to take them again, which was very discouraging at the time. I felt like I would never get over the hurdle. Finding the right salom home is also very important and can take a few tries. I encourage any baby stylist to really take time to find your place. It will be so much better day to day and in the long run. These were all discouraging moments but it really lead me to where I am today. I wouldnt change anything because I never gave up and I think thats the lesson.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I focus on natural textures and lived in Haircuts. Most of my clients air dry, so I make sure my cuts can be low maintenance when they need to be. A lot of clients seek me out for this now and I was very proud of that when I noticed. I felt like I was building more of a brand and a name for myself and what I do.
I also became a Haircut Educator for my salon over a year ago. Stepping into a new role was scary, but it pushed me out of my comfort zone and helped my confidence. Im so grateful to be in a supportive salon environment that encourages our individual growth.
What do you like and dislike about the city?
I grew up in Dallas, so coming to Austin felt so different. Austin is such a vibrant city with so much nature and creativity. I love the blend of old Austin with the new wave over the past few years. I do wish some of the OG businesses could stick around. Thats my only complaint.
