Marie, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I’ve always been the type of girl who told elaborate stories as a kid—mostly to myself, because I’m the middle child and, let’s be honest, no one actually listens to me.
But one day, I decided I wanted to actually do something instead of constantly saying, “I’m going to do that someday,” and then letting a million years go by until I’m on my deathbed thinking, Man, I really should have done XYZ.
So I told myself, “I’m going to write a book.” And I made a deal with myself: if at least ten people liked it, that was enough for me. I’d know I’d accomplished what I set out to do, and then I could move on to the next thing.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It hasn’t always been smooth. There was definitely a learning curve, and honestly, I’m still learning.
One of the biggest things I’ve noticed is how many people think writing a book is easy. It absolutely is not. Especially when you’re writing in a genre with so much competition. You’re practically fighting just to be seen. It’s like being a single grain of rice in the middle of the ocean—you have to figure out how to make someone notice you.
And you definitely have to have thick skin. You’re going to come across people who absolutely love your writing, and people who make you wonder how they think you managed to dress yourself every day.
Not everyone is going to like your writing, and you know what? That’s absolutely okay. Because at the end of the day, as long as you like what you’ve created, that’s what matters.

By day, I have my regular full-time job, and by night, I’m trying to save the world—one dirty word at a time.

I spend way too much time telling myself I’m going to write, only to somehow spend even more time trying to come up with a made-up city name before ultimately deciding I need a nap.
What sets me apart? I write for enjoyment and fun. I genuinely love the creative process, but I also love being the hype person for someone who’s struggling to find the right words, needs another pair of eyes on their work, or simply needs someone in their corner.
I don’t like putting myself into one particular category or box. I’d much rather collaborate, see where I’m needed, and help wherever I can. For me, writing has always been about creativity, connection, and having fun with the process.
We’d love to hear about how you think about risk taking?
Taking a risk with writing can result in it being a great idea—or the absolute worst idea ever. Either way, you’re going to learn something from it.
One example is writing about sensitive topics. When you tackle those subjects, you have to think about your audience and understand that everyone comes to a story with different experiences and sensitivities.
One thing I used to do—or, I should say, not do—was include trigger warnings with my books. My thought process was always, “Well, life doesn’t give you a trigger warning, and neither will this book!”
But as I’ve matured as a writer, I’ve also learned that there’s a difference between challenging your readers and simply giving them the information they need to decide whether a particular story is right for them.
So I’ve calmed down a little….These days, I’ll include a little clarification when I feel it’s appropriate. It doesn’t change the story or how I write it; it just gives my readers the ability to make an informed choice before they dive in.
