Today we’d like to introduce you to Laila Khater.
Hi Laila, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
It all started about five years ago, right here at home. I began making handmade items and machine embroidered pieces just for my girls, nothing more than that at first. I make bags, gifts, and apparel, and I’d use the pieces myself and put them on my daughters. It wasn’t until people started seeing what my daughters and I were wearing and carrying, and asking where they could get one, that I realized this could be more than just a hobby. That interest is really what pushed me to start creating for others, and it’s how this whole journey began.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Honestly, it hasn’t always been smooth, and I think that’s true for most people building something on their own. The biggest struggle for me has been finding the time. Between work, raising kids and everything else going on, carving out real time to create takes intention every single day. On top of that, this industry moves fast, there’s always a new trend, a new technique, a new style people are looking for, so I’m constantly having to keep learning and stay on top of what’s current. It’s a balancing act, but it’s one I’ve learned to embrace as part of the process.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
What I do is create personalized handmade items using a variety of different materials, using machine embroidery woven in, or vinyl, wood, cardstock paper and more! It’s not just about the finished product for me; the process itself brings me real joy, and I think that comes through in the work. If I had to say what I’m most proud of, it wouldn’t be a specific piece or product, it’s my perseverance. Building this, staying consistent, and continuing to grow despite the time constraints and the constant learning curve, that’s the thing I’m most proud of when I look back at this journey.
Who else deserves credit in your story?
Without a doubt, my three daughters and my family. They’ve been my biggest supporters from the very beginning, honestly, they’re the reason this all started in the first place. My daughters wearing and carrying what I made was what first got people asking questions and showing interest, so in a real way, they’ve been my walking advocates. Beyond that, my family’s support has kept me going through the busy seasons and the learning curve, they’re the foundation this whole journey is built on.
