Today we’d like to introduce you to Chappell Moore.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Damn Good Cookies started during COVID, and I never imagined it would turn into the business it is today. At the time, I had started watching all these videos of decorated sugar cookies on TikTok and Instagram and kept thinking, “I want to learn how to do that.”
One day, a customer came into my job with decorated sugar cookies that looked exactly like the ones I had been seeing online. They were absolutely beautiful, but when I tasted one, it didn’t taste nearly as good as it looked. I immediately thought, “I can make these taste so much better!” And honestly, that was the moment that started everything.
I bought myself a mixer and began teaching myself how to bake and decorate cookies from scratch. I researched, watched videos, practiced, made plenty of mistakes, and eventually developed my own recipe. From there, I started making cookies for family and friends, and little by little, word began to spread. Each order pushed me to try something new, improve my decorating skills, and become more confident in what I was creating.
What started as me teaching myself in my kitchen grew through word of mouth, repeat customers, referrals, and people trusting me to be a small part of their special moments. Over time, those opportunities grew from birthdays and baby showers to weddings, graduations, large celebrations, and corporate events.
From the beginning, I never wanted to make cookies that were just pretty, I wanted them to taste just as good as they looked. I wanted people to take that first bite and say, “Damn, that’s a good cookie!” And that became the heart behind Damn Good Cookies.
I’m still learning, growing, and challenging myself creatively, but I’m incredibly proud of how far Damn Good Cookies has come and I’m excited to see where it goes next.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It definitely has not always been a smooth road. Being self-taught meant there was a lot of trial and error in the beginning. I’ve had cookies that didn’t turn out the way I pictured them, recipes I had to redo, late nights, and moments when I questioned whether I was doing enough or growing fast enough.
One of my biggest challenges has been balancing Damn Good Cookies while also working a full-time job. There are days when I leave work and come home to another full workday of baking and decorating cookies. Learning how to manage my time, set boundaries, and not take on more than I can realistically handle has definitely been a process.
I’ve also had to learn not to compare my journey to other cookie artists. Social media can make it look like everyone else is growing faster or has everything figured out, but I’ve learned to focus on my own growth and remember why I started.
Every mistake, late night, difficult order, and challenge has taught me something. The road hasn’t always been smooth, but I think those experiences have made me a better baker, business owner, and creative.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Outside of Damn Good Cookies, I work full-time as a Legal Assistant. My work involves assisting attorneys with preparing legal documents, coordinating hearings, managing deadlines, communicating with courts and other parties, and helping make sure cases continue moving forward.
I think what I’m known for in my work is being dependable, organized, and willing to figure things out. Working in the legal field has taught me the importance of paying attention to details, communicating effectively, and being able to adjust when things change.
What I’m most proud of is being able to balance both sides of my life. By day, I’m working in the legal field, and after hours, I’m running and growing Damn Good Cookies. They require two completely different sides of me, but they also complement each other. My career has taught me organization, professionalism, communication, and how to work under pressure, all things that have helped me become a better business owner.
What sets me apart is that I don’t believe I have to put myself in one box. I can have a career that I’m proud of while also building something creative that belongs to me. Both are a part of who I am, and I’m proud of what I’ve been able to accomplish in each.
What are your plans for the future?
For the future, I’m really looking forward to continuing to grow Damn Good Cookies and seeing just how far I can take it. I would love to expand more into corporate events, larger orders, collaborations, and opportunities that allow me to get my cookies in front of people who may not know about Damn Good Cookies yet.
I also want to continue challenging myself creatively. One thing about me is that I’m always looking at something and thinking, “Okay, how can I turn that into a cookie?” There is always something new to learn, and I never want to become too comfortable with where I am.
As far as big changes, I’m trying not to put too much pressure on myself to have everything figured out. I have a full-time career that I’m proud of, and I also have this business that I’ve built from the ground up. Right now, I’m focused on continuing to grow both, being open to new opportunities, and seeing where God takes me and Damn Good Cookies next.
Ultimately, I would love for Damn Good Cookies to become a name that more people recognize not just because the cookies are beautiful, but because when you hear the name, you already know they’re going to be damn good!
