Today we’d like to introduce you to Libby Leahy.
Libby, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I’m from a small town in IL, I went to colleague at the University of Washington in Seattle and, after graduating, moved to New York City in 2005 to start my career in real estate. I spent more than a decade there, much of it immersed in luxury new development, before my husband, John, and I made a brief stop in Southern California and ultimately settled in Austin in 2018.
We moved to Austin when our son was just one, and then had our daughter here during Covid. In so many ways, we’ve grown up as a family alongside our life in Austin. We’ve gotten to experience the city through our kids—parks, sports, schools, restaurants, neighborhood events, and all the little places you discover when you’re raising a family somewhere. The friendships and community we’ve found here are a huge part of why we love Austin and why it really feels like home.
Professionally, moving here meant rebuilding my business and my network from the ground up. I really focused on doing it through relationships, referrals, and becoming a genuine resource for the people around me. Over the years, that has grown into a real estate business I’m incredibly proud of. I’ve built my business largely through referrals, which means a lot to me. I work hard, I’m straightforward, and I genuinely care about getting the best outcome for my clients—not just getting a deal done.
Becoming a mom in Austin also led to something I never could have planned. After settling in Mueller, I co-founded Moms of Mueller (MOM) with three other neighborhood moms as a way to bring women together and create genuine community. What started locally has grown into hundreds of women connecting through events, friendships, local businesses, and shared experiences. We’re now taking the next step and expanding that vision beyond Mueller with MOM in ATX.
When I think about my story in Austin, my family, my real estate business, and MOM are all really intertwined. I love connecting people—to homes, neighborhoods, local businesses, and especially to each other. Austin is where we are raising our kids, building our careers, finding our people, and creating a life we really love.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Definitely not! I really restarted my real estate career in Austin right before Covid, and around the same time, I had my daughter, Olivia. I don’t think I had any idea what was about to happen in Austin—or just how quickly the real estate market here was going to take off. Suddenly I was incredibly busy, raising two little kids, and learning a new market during a time when everything seemed to be changing by the day. I had to learn a lot, very quickly.
Interestingly, so much of my past experience ended up preparing me for that moment. Many of the people moving to Austin were coming from New York, California and Seattle—all places I had lived and knew well. I understood not only the markets they were coming from, but what it actually feels like to pick up your life, move somewhere completely new, and try to figure out where you belong. I think having moved so many times myself made me a better Realtor. I could relate to my clients beyond the house itself—the schools, neighborhoods, commute, friendships, lifestyle and all of those little things you don’t necessarily think about until you’re actually making a move. It was a crazy few years and definitely a crash course in Austin real estate, but it ultimately shaped the business I have today.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m a residential Realtor with Compass, working throughout Austin and the surrounding areas. After more than 20 years in real estate, I’ve had a really unique range of experience. I’ve worked on transactions from around half a million dollars to being involved in $50 million-plus sales during my years in New York City. I’ve worked with first-time buyers, luxury clients, celebrities, developers, investors, families relocating across the country, and just about everything in between. I genuinely enjoy working with all of them.
I think what I’m known for most is that I work incredibly hard, I know my business, and I bring a positive attitude to the process. Real estate can be stressful and emotional, and every client and every transaction is different. I’m good at meeting people where they are, figuring out what they need from me, and getting to work. I can be assertive when I need to be, patient when that’s what the situation calls for, and I’m always going to give my clients my professional advice. I think my years of experience have also taught me not to get rattled easily—there’s usually a solution, and my job is to help find it.
What I’m most proud of is that the majority of my business comes from referrals and repeat clients. I’ve been fortunate to receive some wonderful professional recognition, but having someone I worked years ago call me again—or trust me with their best friend, their parents or their kids—means more to me. I’ve built my career by working hard, treating every client and transaction as important, and really loving what I do. I think that combination is what has allowed me to work successfully with such a wide range of people throughout my career.
How can people work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
The easiest way to work with me is to reach out! Whether you’re thinking about buying or selling, relocating to Austin, or you just have a real estate question and aren’t sure where to start, I’m always happy to be a resource. My business is built largely through referrals, so sharing my name with a friend, family member or colleague who needs a Realtor is truly the best way to support me.
I also love connecting and collaborating outside of real estate. Through MOM and our expansion into MOM in ATX, we’re always looking for great local businesses, interesting experiences and ways to bring women together throughout Austin. Whether it’s real estate, MOM, or simply a great Austin connection, I love meeting people and finding ways to work together.
