Hi Aracely, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
My photography journey started with a gift from my husband in 2021. He knew how much I loved photography and surprised me with my first DSLR camera. I’ve loved photography since the days of disposable cameras, and I was always the person taking photos of family and friends.
After high school, I even considered studying photography in college, but a counselor told me that photography was more of a hobby and encouraged me to pursue something else. I ended up studying graphic design instead, never imagining that photography would eventually become such an important part of my life.
After years of practicing on family and friends, my number-one cheerleader (my husband) encouraged me to start charging for my sessions and create a social media page for my work. That little push was the beginning of what would eventually become Photos by Chely.
Little by little, people started reaching out and trusting me to capture their most important moments. At the same time, I continued learning, practicing, and pushing myself to become more confident in my craft.
Today, I can honestly say I’ve come a long way from the girl with a disposable camera, but I also know there is still so much more for me to learn. Photography continues to challenge me and inspire me, and I’m incredibly grateful for every client who chooses me to document their memories. Their trust in my work means more to me than they probably realize.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
One of my biggest challenges has been balancing photography with being a mom, a wife, and a full-time employee.
There were many times when photography had to take a backseat because there simply weren’t enough hours in the day. Some days, I honestly questioned whether I should quit. As much as I loved photography, it was also asking a lot from me and I wondered if I could continue giving it the time and energy it deserved.
Then, last year, I was diagnosed with cancer. You might think that would have been the moment I stepped away from photography, but it actually gave me an even stronger reason to keep fighting, not just for my health, but for the things that make me happy.
Photography became an escape for me. The moment I step into a session, the noise in my head and the stress around me seem to melt away. I’m able to be present, connect with my clients, and simply enjoy what I love doing.
That experience reminded me that sometimes the things we’re most passionate about are worth fighting for. I couldn’t give up on this dream, because photography has become so much more than a business to me it has become a part of who I am.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m an outdoor photographer specializing in weddings, senior portraits, and family photography. I primarily work with natural light, and my editing style is bright, warm, and true to life. I love creating images that feel timeless, joyful, and authentic rather than overly posed or heavily edited.
One thing I’m most proud of is the experience I create for my clients. I want people to feel comfortable in front of my camera, even if they’ve never had professional photos taken before. I try to make every session feel less like a photoshoot and more like spending time with a friend. I’m constantly talking, laughing, and giving gentle direction so my clients can relax and genuinely enjoy the moment.
I think what sets me apart is the connection I build with the people I photograph. I’m not just there to take pretty pictures. I want to capture the little moments, personalities, and emotions that make each family, couple, or senior unique.
I’m also proud of how much I’ve grown since starting my business. I’m always learning and pushing myself creatively, but I never want to lose the reason I started: to give people photographs they can look back on and truly feel something when they see them.
Can you share something surprising about yourself?
Something that might surprise people is that I lived most of my childhood in Mexico and came back to the United States as a teenager, and for a long time I felt very insecure about speaking English, especially in front of people or in unfamiliar environments.
Photography has helped me come out of that shell in ways I never expected. When I’m behind my camera, I feel confident. I know how to connect with people, make them laugh, and help them feel comfortable in front of the camera.
I think that experience has also helped me connect with my clients on a deeper level. I know what it feels like to feel uncomfortable or unsure of yourself, so I make it a priority to create an environment where my clients feel seen, comfortable, and confident. In a way, photography has helped me find my voice.
