Today we’d like to introduce you to Francesca Lubega.
Hi Francesca, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I fell in love with photography when I was 16, I used to always get my friends to come over and shoot concepts on my phone at the time and edit on Picsart. I got my first camera when I was 17, and since then I’ve been shooting. I moved from Uganda to New Orleans for college and this is where I began to hone into my visual language, In my 4 years in New Orleans, I remained very inspired by the colors of the city, and the eclectic nature of everyone who lived there. I began trying to story tell through photography. It also became a way for me to connect with others, I often try capture the soul of people before it has a chance to hide.
I relocated to Austin in 2025, and continue to hone into my craft here. Being in a new city has also been opening up new opportunities to collaborate with different artists, businesses, and chance to capture special moments for a new set of people.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Being a visual artist comes with its own struggles. Staying true to your creative self and wanting to put the work out there that you want to see. Personal projects are logistically difficult to put out, finding collaborators, sometimes even finding the money to pour into these projects is tough. I don’t do photography fulltime, I do this part time so I don’t have to dilute my work by always taking projects to make ends meet. This allows me the flexibility of being more intentional with the work I do so I am able to balance my creative projects and paid work.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I specialize in visual art/ photography. What distinguishes my work is my dreamy style, I play with framing, color and motion to create interesting and distinct visual art pieces as well as work for brands, individuals, and couples.
What do you like and dislike about the city?
Austin feels like an oasis, I love how small the city is, and how much nature we have compared to other major texas cities.
Least: Where are the sidewalks?? They just appear and disappear when you are not in downtown/south congress
