Today we’d like to introduce you to Sierra Velez.
Hi Sierra, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I picked up the guitar when I was 11 years old. Growing up, music gave me a place to express emotions I didn’t always have the words or safety to communicate. Looking back, I realize I was writing my way through experiences I didn’t yet understand. My songs helped me process what was happening internally, long before I had the language for it.
I attended a performing arts high school as a music major and later spent several years singing professionally in a wedding band. That experience strengthened me as a live performer, but over time, I wanted to re-focus and build something that felt more personal and true to who I was becoming.
Much of my journey has involved healing, rebuilding my confidence, and learning to trust my own voice. That naturally became the heart of my artistry. I create soulful R&B and neo-soul rooted in honest storytelling, live instrumentation, self-love, empowerment, and personal growth.
In 2026, I took a major leap by leaving the East Coast and relocating to Austin to pursue music full-time. Since then, my music has been recognized by KUTX 98.9, TIDAL’s Pop&B editorial playlist, EARMILK, and other international publications and radio outlets. I’m currently building toward the release of my EP, “Becoming,” which reflects the messy, courageous process of outgrowing old versions of yourself. I’m still in the middle of that journey, but today I feel more aligned with my voice, my purpose, and the artist I’m becoming.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has absolutely not been a smooth road. I grew up navigating trauma and instability, which affected my confidence, my sense of safety, and my ability to trust my own voice. For years, I struggled with feeling that I had to make myself smaller, prove my worth, or wait for someone else to give me permission. Healing from those experiences while trying to build a creative career has required me to confront a lot of fear, self-doubt, and deeply rooted beliefs about what I deserve.
Professionally, I spent several years performing other people’s music in a wedding band. Although it gave me valuable experience, I eventually realized I was helping build someone else’s vision while neglecting my own. Walking away meant giving up a familiar source of income and choosing a path with far less certainty. I then relocated from the East Coast to Austin without an established community or professional network, essentially rebuilding my life and career from the ground up.
Being an independent artist also means balancing the creative work with the financial pressure and countless responsibilities that happen behind the scenes. There have been setbacks, rejection, isolation, and moments when I questioned whether I was making the right choices. I’m still navigating those challenges, but I’ve learned that progress isn’t always polished or linear. For me, success has been continuing to choose myself, trust my voice, and create music even when the path forward isn’t clear.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m a singer-songwriter specializing in emotionally driven R&B and neo-soul. My sound brings together expressive vocals, conversational songwriting, live instrumentation, and subtle Afro-Caribbean, blues, and pop influences. I’m drawn to arrangements that feel warm and organic, allowing the emotion and story of each song to remain at the center.
One of my strengths is translating complicated internal experiences into music that feels clear, relatable, and easy to connect with. My years as a professional live vocalist shaped my musical instincts, versatility, and ability to connect with an audience.
I’m most proud of developing an artistic identity that genuinely sounds and feels like me. What sets me apart is the combination of emotional depth and the unique sound in my work. I can acknowledge pain without allowing it to become the end of the story. I want listeners to leave my music feeling seen, but also more connected to their own strength.
What are your plans for the future?
My immediate focus is completing my upcoming debut EP, “Becoming,” and expanding the visual and live world around the project. I’m looking forward to performing more with my full band and giving people an experience that allows them to connect with the music beyond simply streaming it.
Honestly, I want to take over Austin—in the best way. I want Sierra Velez to become a household name here and contribute more soul and R&B to a city already known for its live music. My goal is to build genuine relationships with local listeners, artists, organizations, and venues while creating a live show that people recognize and want to experience again.
From there, I want to take the music beyond Austin through festivals, touring, and larger stages. Ultimately, I’m working toward becoming a widely recognized artist while building a sustainable career that gives me the freedom to keep creating, collaborate with people I respect, and reach listeners around the world.
