Today we’d like to introduce you to Kim Cox.
Hi Kim, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I found my passion at the age of 40. I was a divorced single mother of three with zero support from my ex. I woke up one morning and was giving a notice of in thirty days all support would be ending. At the time I felt it was a catastrophe but now I am so beyond grateful for that shift. It truly changed the trajectory of my life.
I had to get real quick. I had to find a sustainable career and income that would provide for me and my family. I also knew at that moment that I would probably need to work for the remainder of my life so to find something that felt purposeful and passionate was high on my objectives.
I hired a life coach in Manhattan that to this day I have never met in person. We worked diligently for several months and after many quizzes, tests, analysis’ and much contemplation I knew that I wanted a career in service and that something that always brought joy to me was all forms of physical movement.
All these years later I could not be more grateful for what I have been able to experience and build in the fitness and mental health industry. I currently am a somatic yoga therapist that works primarily in nervous system regulation and trauma healing. What built up to this phase in my career was a vast amount of body work and certifications, workshops, trainings and a whole lot of self study and exploration. I have focused I. Personal training, Pilates, yoga, myofascial release, group fitness, psychotherapeutic yoga, and more.
What I currently focus on is so valuable and effective. After going back to school for three years to gain my somatic experiencing training I feel I offer the perfect mix, the secret sauce in releasing of suffering and negative patterns of behaviors and finding your true integral self. I could not explain in words how much I LOVE my job!
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Of course not. It is almost impossible to build enough clientele and business to exclusively devote yourself and the support of three kids with a fitness job. Yet my back was to the wall. I had thirty days to at least begin a plan. I was raised to work hard with a strong work ethic and I had to hustle, literally hustle. I also contribute to my success the fact that I was continually evolving and learning and growing as a practitioner. At any one given time I was specializing in multiple modalities so as to attract the most clients to have me be a one stop shop. My kids and their well being was a strong and wonderful motivator to never give up.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
I am a somatic yoga therapist. My work draws upon the foundational teachings of yoga including asana (the physical practice). Breathwork, meditation and mantra. As well as somatic experiencing that is effective for the discharge and release of trauma and incomplete stress responses. I educate and share many tools for nervous system regulation as well as effective methodology in moving stuck energy and letting go of past stories and events that no longer are serving someone.
We aren’t encouraged much in this world to actually feel the uncomfortable. Yet healing comes from gaining a greater tolerance for uncomfortable things. Being able to sit with it, feel it, identify it and find some conclusions around the root of it. We oftentimes need to go right through the pain in order to feel the peace on the other side and somatic work allows the body to be heard and understood.
I also teach several times a week at Black Swan Yoga Round Rock and Cedar Park. I love the community and the friendships that I have built there.
Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
I have been so lucky to have amazing mentors and teachers and guides. I am grateful for Peter Levine’s quest in identifying and naming and dedicating his life to better understanding the brain and the nervous system in relation to trauma.
I also have a handful of wonderful, powerful, smart and thriving women in my life that I have known for a very long time. Each of them is a shining example to me and who I want to be. Women friendships are everything.
