Today we’d like to introduce you to Alexis Hester.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I started my vlog and TikTok with the initial intention of sharing food and drinks I enjoyed with others. My friend, Sarah, actually encouraged me to start and she’s somebody who has done a fantastic job of building and adapting her style. I still love sharing meals and drinks I enjoyed any place I go when I travel, or simply just in town, but I’ve shifted gears to share more of just me. Whether it’s a place I’m traveling, a piece of food I’m eating, or a video of one of my pets, I just have found it to be more fun and more personal. And that’s where I am today. Sharing small insights into my life in hopes that others can find me relatable in different ways.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It has not been a smooth road. When you first get started, it’s all about building a following and engagement. That still stands true today, but I get in my own way. Having a full-time job, it’s hard for me to lean into the social media and creative side all day, every day so that puts limits on how I can continue to reach others. I don’t always share in real time and I don’t always know what to post or how to share these ideas, so it’s been harder for me as a creative. There are SO many of us out there, people much more successful and creative than me, so it’s been hard at times coming up with my own voice and ideas.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I work as a Team Lead for a tech company in Customer Success. I am blessed to work remotely and to have held this job for over 4 years at the same place. How we operate is essentially a customer purchases our product, they go through an onboarding and implementation, and then get transferred to my team where we strategically optimize ways to grow their business and retain them as a client. It is not as simple as some may think, especially in the tech world where everything is so up and down, especially since the boom of AI.
In my work, I’m known for the relationships I have built internally and professionally with clients and that can definitely be what sets me apart from others. You have to be a great communicator and not everybody in my industry or on my team has that skill set.
I am most proud of how our team has managed some tough headwinds and even tougher ones ahead, but that we are stronger together than we are apart. It comes down to the direct leadership in place and how we have weathered each storm together.
One other thing I want to note, is that when I’m not in my 9-5, I get a lot of joy out of creating beaded necklaces, bag charms, canvas tote bags and videos/photos for my social media. These are outlets that allow me to disengage from the more mundane work days and have a chance to really lean into more of my creative side.
Who else deserves credit in your story?
In terms of how I’ve grown professionally and who I’ve become, I can only credit ONE person for that and her name is Tina Honore-McGaskey. She was my direct manager for close to one year and she truly opened my eyes to our world in tech, but also believed in me and encouraged me every day. She is a selfless person who never thought about how she was doing, only about how her team was doing. How we were succeeding and the business recognized that. She has since left for another company, but our relationship is very much still strong. We talk frequently and she still has that same energy, grit, determination, and belief that I can be great in my role. It has really made me a better person, overall.
