Today we’d like to introduce you to Houston Puryear Ward.
Hi Houston, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I’ve spent more than 20 years in the beauty industry, and my career started in New York City when I was 19. I began as a freelance makeup artist, working across multiple beauty brands, editorial projects and luxury beauty environments, including Condé Nast and Bobbi Brown. Those early experiences gave me an incredible foundation in artistry, brand identity, client experience and the business of beauty.
Over the years, my career has evolved far beyond makeup. I’ve worked with private clients, brides, brands and events while also building a strong presence in content creation, social media and beauty education. Today, I’m based in Texas, where I continue to work professionally as a makeup artist while creating beauty and lifestyle content and working within the medical aesthetics space.
What has stayed consistent throughout every chapter is my ability to connect with women and make beauty feel approachable, elevated and real. After two decades in this industry, I know what works, what women actually use and what deserves a place in their makeup bag.
Now, as I approach 40, I’m stepping into what feels like the most exciting chapter yet — continuing to grow my platform, expanding my work as a creator and building something of my own within the beauty industry. I’ve never been more clear on my point of view or more excited about where I’m going.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It definitely hasn’t been a perfectly smooth road. Building a career in a creative industry for more than 20 years has required constant reinvention, resilience and a willingness to evolve.
I’ve built my career while raising three children, navigating major personal and professional transitions, moving between different seasons of life and, at times, essentially starting over. There have been moments when the path I thought I was on changed completely, and I had to figure out what came next.
One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is that starting over doesn’t mean starting from nothing. Every experience — the beautiful ones and the difficult ones — has given me more confidence, perspective and clarity about who I am and what I want to build.
I’m probably more ambitious now than I was at 25, but I’m also much more intentional. I’ve learned not to wait for the perfect timing, the perfect circumstances or someone else’s permission to go after something. Sometimes the challenge is exactly what pushes you into the next version of yourself.
At this point in my life, I’m not afraid of a pivot. I’ve learned that I can rebuild, evolve and keep moving forward — and that has probably been one of my greatest strengths.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Over the past 20+ years, my work as a makeup artist has taken me far beyond a traditional beauty career. I’ve built a loyal private clientele, and I’ve been fortunate to have clients fly me out specifically for weddings, events, shoots and personal projects — something I never take for granted.
I specialize in polished, elevated makeup that still looks and feels like the woman wearing it. My philosophy has always been that great makeup shouldn’t enter the room before you do. I want my clients to feel confident, beautiful and completely themselves.
My career has also expanded into beauty education, content creation, brand partnerships and social media, giving me the opportunity to experience the industry from both sides — as an artist working directly with women and as a creator communicating with a much larger audience.
What I’m most proud of is the trust I’ve built. Many of my clients have been with me for years, have brought me into some of the most important moments of their lives, and have referred me to their friends and families. To me, that kind of loyalty is one of the greatest accomplishments you can have in a service-based career.
What sets me apart is experience, but also instinct. After thousands of faces and more than two decades in beauty, I understand how to read a face, read a room and, most importantly, read the person sitting in my chair. I know when to enhance, when to edit and when to leave something alone.
Today, I’m bringing all of that experience into an even bigger vision — combining artistry, education, content and eventually products of my own, while staying rooted in the same philosophy I’ve had from the beginning: beauty should make you feel more like yourself, not less.
What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
I think one of the biggest qualities behind my success is simply being myself. My personality has always been a huge part of my work, and I think people can feel when someone genuinely loves what they do.
The clients I attract usually become long-term clients. I’ve had so many women stay with me for years, refer their friends and family, and bring me into different seasons and important moments of their lives. That kind of loyalty means a lot to me.
I’ve grown my career by showing up as myself, loving the work, and truly caring about the people sitting in my chair. I’ve never wanted it to feel transactional. I want every client to feel seen, comfortable and taken care of — and I think that genuine connection has been one of the biggest reasons my career has continued to grow.
