Today we’d like to introduce you to Brittany Jernigan.
Hi Brittany, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Back in 2013 I was living in Austin when a friend of mine came across Slackerville on S. 1st Street, an enclave of quirky businesses, art studios, and tiny homes first established in 1979. I had just started playing around with jewelry and she was upcycling clothing. There was a small store front with way too affordable rent so we just went for it and set up shop! The day of our grand opening, my dad lost his battle with throat cancer. I stuck the summer out but then decided to move back home to New Braunfels to be with my mom. There was a monthly art event at a local bar that I would set up at and after a few months, I met Kat Balmos who owned an eclectic boutique and vintage store. She asked me to join her team of vendors and I’ve been with her ever since! She has since opened 2 more stores in downtown New Braunfels, The Local and Heritage Supply. The Local has become home for Blue Jean Revival!
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Honestly, it’s been fairly smooth. Like every business, I’ve experienced learning curves and ups and downs but I have a very supportive family and Kat has been an amazing mentor along the way! Covid shut the stores down for a few months but The Local has an extremely supportive group of customers and Kat came up with new ways to shop so we got through that pretty well. Last year, I had my first (and only) baby so making product and navigating all that comes with running a business while being home with my now 20 month old has been challenging but I know it’s a short time period so we’re taking it in stride!
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I design and make jewelry. I’ve been a jewelry girlie since I was a kid. I was even making painted plastic and paper bead jewelry from a young age… always had on my stick on or clip on earrings, necklace, ring, bracelet, and anklet! I’m probably best known for my feather earrings but staying on trend is what keeps me in business. I’ve been having fun experimenting with colorful beaded jewelry lately!
How do you think about luck?
I feel lucky to be able to do what I love and be creative on a daily basis as well as to be able to work from home. I’m an introverted homebody with social anxiety so not having to be at a “job” every day has been helpful for my mental health.
