Today we’d like to introduce you to Danielle Geraci.
Hi Danielle, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I was raised by my mom in Marquette Michigan hiking and kayaking and biking, and when I graduated college in 2015 and moved to traverse city to work as a surgical technologist in the operating room assisting surgeons. I worked for a year and my dad who I didn’t really grow up with at all he likes to buy sailboats from Michigan and sail them down to Florida via the Mississippi River. So I said sure, quit my job and took off on a 27 foot sailboat with him down to the Florida keys. We spent a year on the sailboat and became best friends. It was quite the adventure! I created a YouTube channel to document the experience. My channel is Daniraelives. After that was over, we got a school bus and brought that back to Michigan where he converted that to live in. I wanted something similar so I bought a propagated van and my dad helped me convert that to a live in. I got a job for a while back in Michigan in my career, and lived in the van for a few years. I decided I wanted a break from the healthcare field and quit my job to take the van out to Montana and work a season at big sky ski resort, it was the best winter of my life! Waitressed at a place at 8800 feet I had to take a 22 million dollar lift up to it everyday and learned to snowboard at 11,600ft. It was a blast! After that Covid hit and I end d up back in Michigan again living with my mom. Then I decided to travel back down to Key West in the van and my dad went with another boat, trailering this time. We invited my friend Corinne with us this time and she loved it so much she moved there! We ended up heading back in summer and I started doing travel for my career taking contracts all over the country. I had met my now husband at a club in Key West and we travelled a month long van trip along the coast of Mexico together all the way to South padre island in Texas! What a trip. He’s from New York so I ended up in New York with him building a life, while still travelling down to Florida most winters. We recently bought a house and got married, and he’s got two kids which we plan on having a kid of our own in a year or so. Still traveling as much as I can but now that we have bills due I work full time again in the operating room. A great life I’m proud of what I’ve done and excit d for the future plans, like Italy for our honeymoon!
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Well, graduating college and building my career in the operating room hasn’t always been easy. Ten years in the making I finally feel good about my knowledge. Sailing the Mississippi down to Florida wasn’t always easy, we broke our rudder on the river and had to rebuild a new one from scratch! Travelling in the van wasn’t always easy too it’s a hard life sometimes. Lots of struggles but always overcome them and push forward!
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I specialize in the instrumentation and sterilization of surgery. I get all the tools ready for surgery, and I assist surgeons during the procedures. I love doing ortho so total knee and hip replacements robotically assisted. I do bowel resections and hysterectomies or removing the uterus. I also assist in cesarean sections. I love it but it’s not always easy. I keep everything and everyone sterile during before and after the case.
