Today we’d like to introduce you to Betsy Saliba.
Hi Betsy, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
As a young child I loved to create…and it took until having a young child of my own to remember that. She teaches me to be free, to play, not to take everything too seriously and to release control. I am incredibly grateful to be in a season of life where we make art together almost every day. An ongoing exercise is to stay present in the moment with her over the outcome of said work.
I spent a decade as a corporate buyer in San Francisco. Now I love to support local Austin artists, advise current collectors and inspire new ones!
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
At the end of my corporate career, I was exhausted and burned out, but holding on to the role for dear life. I did not know what was next and was afraid. I was pushed into the next chapter, and was blessed with a period of space to rest and regroup. During this time I learned who I was in sobriety, I met the very sensitive neurodivergent that had been masking to keep up. I was impatient in the unknown and antsy to transition into the next chapter, and of course it evolved all on its own time. The surrender, the waiting, the loss of identity, unclear of my value or contributions, and access to individual resources taught me a lot.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
It is so rewarding connecting art to its new owner, and to transform a space into a more magical realm. As an advisor, I am deeply intuitive, gifted with a wonderful Taurean aesthetic eye and passionate about uplifting the underdog. The welcoming attitude that draws people to Austin has also been reflected in the art community – a warm welcome, generous spirit and unpretentious candor.
I also love to make my own work, painting with oil, acrylics, watercolor, encaustic, hand building pottery, natural dying fabric, building mosaics, knitting and it goes on. I frequent galleries and artist studios with my daughter several times a week – a true joy – admiring new work, cultivating relationships, and always learning.
How do you think about happiness?
I love color – especially how they blend into each other. I love when you make something, and there is an aspect of surprise as it is drying or baking or transforming into its next phase. I love humans – and how sweet it is that we make things and show each other. I love when we help each other, and blend our gifts to create a tapestry of growth collectively. Ram Dass shared that “we are all just walking each other home.” I hope to make the path more beautiful along the way.
