Today we’d like to introduce you to Danielle Perrecone.
Hi Danielle, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My journey has been anything but linear. At 18, I received a Division I scholarship to play field hockey at Miami University. From the outside, I probably looked disciplined, driven, and capable, but internally, I was often battling intense anxiety, distorted fears, emotional reactivity, and the feeling that everyday life required far more effort than it seemed to require for everyone else.
The pressure and expectations of college brought many of those challenges to the surface. I spent several difficult years feeling overwhelmed, anxious, crying often, and calling home for support. Even though I was determined and continued moving forward, I was working incredibly hard just to keep up.
After graduating, I moved to Ecuador, where I lived for two and a half years; I clearly love to be challenged. That experience challenged my sense of safety and security in profound ways, and after returning home, I finally had the opportunity to better understand my brain and the patterns that had shaped my life.
I learned that I had been compensating for an underdeveloped brain, retained primitive reflexes, and limiting subconscious beliefs that were influencing my emotions and responses. I had become very good at pushing through, but pushing through isn’t the same as thriving. It felt as though I had been living with 50-pound weights around my ankles and assuming everyone else was carrying the same load.
As I began doing the work to reorganize and develop my brain, life started to feel less like a battlefield. I realized that we are not permanently defined by anxiety, limiting beliefs, or the coping patterns we develop. Real change is possible, and that personal transformation ultimately led me to become the founding lead Brain Coach at In the Cortex.
Today, I’m also a mom who homeschools my two amazing children, Axel, who is 10, and Sigi, who is 7. Motherhood has deepened my passion for this work because I see every day how important it is to understand the brain, honor each person’s unique development, and create the right support for growth.
My mission is to help people recognize the possibility within themselves. I’m passionate about helping others develop a healthier, more connected brain so life can feel easier, more joyful, and more purposeful. I feel incredibly grateful to share what I’ve learned and to help people discover that they are capable of far more than their past experiences may have led them to believe.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Not at all! It’s been a winding, deeply transformational road. Over the last ten years, much of my growth has happened while building In the Cortex and stepping into motherhood. Those two experiences have shaped me in ways I never could have anticipated.
Building In the Cortex has required perseverance, vulnerability, and a willingness to keep learning. There have been many moments when I’ve had to grow beyond my own limitations, question what I thought I knew, and continue moving forward even when the path felt uncertain. Developing this work has been incredibly meaningful, but it has also asked me to evolve personally alongside the mission.
Five years ago, I went through a divorce and began navigating motherhood as a single mom. That transition changed my outlook on everything. Raising two small humans while building a business and continuing to grow personally has required tremendous flexibility, self-awareness, and resilience. It has also made me deeply aware that my children are watching my every move—not for perfection, but to learn how to navigate life.
Motherhood cracked me open in ways I never expected. Having Axel and Sigi watching how I think, speak, respond, and move through the world made me much more committed to shifting the way I see things. I want them to witness that difficult seasons can be met with courage, that asking for support is a strength, and that we always have the capacity to grow.
Divorce, single motherhood, and entrepreneurship have each challenged me to release old identities and redefine what strength, success, and family can look like. They have also reminded me that growth is not something we complete; it is something we return to in every season of life.
The road has not been smooth or linear, but each season has given me an opportunity to evolve. My journey has made me even more committed to helping people understand that they are not broken and you don’t have to have it all figured out, that their brains can change, and that personal transformation can influence not only their own lives but also the lives of the people watching them.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
In the Cortex is a brain-based education and coaching organization helping children, adults, families, and educators understand how retained primitive reflexes, underdeveloped lower centers of the brain affect the nervous system influence learning, behavior, emotions, and relationships.
Our core brain reorganization program includes 12 online modules that can be completed independently through a self-led format. Participants can also add personalized coaching for additional guidance, accountability, and support tailored to their individual needs. Our online community provides connection, encouragement, and shared learning throughout the process.
Rather than labeling people as “broken,” we ask what happened in their development and what support their brain needs now. We believe the brain is adaptable and that meaningful change is possible at any stage of life.
Our long-term vision is to create a nervous-system-focused school centered on regulation, connection, individualized development, and the whole child. Ultimately, our goal is to expand the conversation around human potential and help people move forward with greater clarity, compassion, and hope.
What makes you happy?
What makes me happiest is being present with my children in nature and sharing meaningful, face-to-face conversations with friends, parents, and anyone who values genuine connection. I also find joy in cooking, meditating, reading, and doing my own brainwork—integrating primitive reflexes and supporting the development of the lower brain centers.
I especially enjoy Reconnects, the process I use to rewire limiting subconscious beliefs. These practices help me stay grounded, continue my own growth, and embody the work I share with others.
Most of all, I’m happiest when I’m supporting people who are committed to meaningful change. Seeing someone gain clarity, build confidence, and recognize their own potential is incredibly rewarding. It reminds me why this work matters and continues to inspire me every day.
