Meet Melissa Rios of Austin

Today we’d like to introduce you to Melissa Rios.

Hi Melissa, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I am Puerto Rican and Filipina and I serve dishes from both of my cultures. I was laid off during COVID and began cooking food out of my home. It became a passion, so I found a brick and mortar. During the renovations, we suffered a house fire and lost everything causing a delay in the restaurant opening. We overcame it all and we are now #3 in our city according to Google reviews.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It has not exactly been a smooth road. Shortly after obtaining our restaurant space, the codes changed causing additional renovations to be needed. We also suffered a house fire where we lost everything and had to delay our opening.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I offer a fusion of Puerto Rican and Filipino food in Central Texas. I’m proud of the obstacles we have overcome and our ability to bring joy to our customers through our flavors and customer service. There are no other PR/Filipino fusion restaurants in the area. We are also incorporating more vegetarian options to our menu so we can better serve a population that is underrepresented in the local restaurant industry.

Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc?
I don’t have any specific favorites, but I love watching videos and reading articles regarding healthy living and travel.
