Check Out Jennifer S’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jennifer S.

Hi Jennifer, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
When Covid hit in 2020, the start-up tech company I was working for was negatively affected. Employees were getting laid-off due to reduced company revenue and eventually, I was laid-off as well. I found myself dumbfounded by the sudden amount of free-time I had while being in-between jobs. Little did I know, getting laid-off was a blessing in disguise because I discovered a new passion: Content Creation. Sure, I already knew about content creation and had a social media account, but I was met with the opportunity to create and share my passions for both music and video games. Fast forward 5 years later, I have become both a Twitch Affiliate and YouTube Partner by building and fostering an online community that is diverse, inclusive, and fun-loving. I am forever grateful to be able to do this meaningful work through the creation of gaming content and DJing on Twitch.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has not, and almost never, been a smooth road. Being a triple minority (a Black and Filipino woman), I am an easy target for hate in a predominantly White and male space. I have received racially-motivated hate raids, spam, and even had someone send pizza to my home without my consent. Fortunately, I was raised to have thick skin and am very resilient. I have always been confident and prideful in who I am and what I stand for – and so any negative acts towards me usually roll of my shoulder. On top of this, I have continuously learned how to wear multiple hats. As a Content Creator, it’s easy to assume that all you have to do is sit in front of a camera and play a game. But in order to grow, you have to learn how to be good at marketing, branding, networking, technology, and videography.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I specialize in Gaming and DJing. I am known for creating gaming content and performing live DJ mixes on Twitch. Within the gaming space, I usually focus on playthroughs of JRPGs (Japanese Role-Playing Games), Retro, or Indie Games. Musically, I tend to focus on mixing specific genres or decades of music – especially 90s and 2000’s Hip-Hop & RnB. What sets me apart is that being Black and Filipino, I have the opportunity of bringing diverse communities together and representing the underrepresented in positive and creative ways.

Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
In the next 5-10 years, I honestly see both the gaming and music industries plateauing. I think both have reached its peak and smaller creatives, developers, and businesses are having their opportunities to shine. Just because something is popular doesn’t mean it’s going to be high-quality and/or creative, and I think both gamers and music-lovers are starting to notice this trend.
