Community Highlights: Meet Whitney Scott of Wingtip Betty

Today we’d like to introduce you to Whitney Scott.

Hi Whitney , please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
After writing a research paper on landfill waste in college I was horrified about the amount of waste we as a society produce on a daily basis. So many incredible things wind up in the landfill daily because we don’t take the time to rehome items. Growing up the majority of my wardrobe came from thrift stores and second hand sources. Shopping secondhand had become my happy place. After much thought I decided to combine what made me happy, secondhand shopping, with my desire to help reduce landfill waste, and my business was born! It is my passion to help otherwise discarded items find homes that will cherish them!

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I would say my biggest challenge currently is just trying to keep up with the changes in the vintage scene in Austin. I started my business around twelve years ago and from then to now things are completely different. While markets are more plentiful there is also significantly more competition than ever before. One thing I have found in running my business is that things are never constant. The ability to pivot and the openness to change is imperative to success. What works for me one day, may not work the same the next and I have to remind myself that is ok.

As you know, we’re big fans of Wingtip Betty. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Wingtip Betty is a small vintage business specializing in an eclectic and size inclusive mix of clothing, jewelry, and accessories for all gender expressions. We think that secondhand and vintage clothing should be accessible to all and work to keep our pricing accessible to the every day consumer. We also strive to make shopping with us a safe space for people to explore different gender expressions and want shopping with us to feel like playing dress up! We believe that you move through the world differently when you feel confident in your appearance and our goal is to help you find pieces that help you feel your best! My favorite pieces to sell are funky prints, fabrics with fun textures, and pieces that make people feel truly individual.

Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
My advice for new sellers would be to try your best to be confident in yourself. No one has all the answers and we are all just trying different things to see what sticks! Buy and sell things that you feel passionate about because people will be more likely to connect with what you are selling when they can tell you believe in the product!
