Today we’d like to introduce you to Dulce Mac.
Hi Dulce, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I never in a million years thought I would do any type of public speaking, if you ask people who don’t know me they would probably say I don’t speak but if you ask my friends they’d say I’m funny and talk a lot. I used to be really shy and insecure about my voice as well, with English being my second language also. I was in LA for film school so I wanted to be mostly a writer for TV. I had befriended some comics and ended up starting a podcast with one of them. It became a running joke to ask me when I was going to finally do stand up. My friend was having a show in Austin, and he tried to get me to go up, I ended up running down the street and hiding. A few weeks later I was working box office at the Houston improv and wrote down a set, ended up going on stage that night. I was absolutely terrified, it was supposed to be 5 mins, but I did 3, I got some laughs and realized I loved it.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I think it’s very rare to have a “smooth” road in comedy. I’ve definitely had struggles, and still struggle today. Finding your voice I think always ends up being the biggest one as well as believing in yourself while the world sometimes tears you down. There’s a lot to learn about networking and balancing professional and personal relationships, I think it’s very important to learn that early, it saves u from some obstacles u can accidentally create yourself
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I do stand up comedy and sometimes help write for roast battles / dais. Working on a book right now, what sets me apart from others is that I’ve had many random interesting experiences even if some were painful, it has shaped who I am. I always try to be proud of everything I put out. Some of my proudest moments in comedy so far have been doing roast battle, it’s very nerve wracking to say jokes u haven’t said before and put yourself out there and battle. So it’s awesome when u put in the work to write and it goes well.
What’s next?
Right now I’ve been on tour with my best friend Kim Congdon, it’s about to slow down so right now working on writing more, getting passed at clubs, working on my hour and doing as much work as I can in town. But excited for what I get into in the future !
