Community Highlights: Meet Lourdes Torres of Lourdes

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lourdes Torres.

Hi Lourdes, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
The idea dropped in my mind, as I was sitting in my Tulum styled apartment nearing the end of my 1 year stay in Mexico. The idea was to blend blue lotus and rose together. For what? I did not know. Then it all became clear less than 2 months later, right before the Christmas of 2022.

I had spent thousands of dollars on skincare that I could see was ineffective in creating real change in my dermis layers. I was recommended a tallow based face cream I tried and was blown away and knew that I could formulate improvements.

I began formulating a face cream and body butter with Rose and Blue Lotus essential oils with other quality fats including tallow. I filled ceramic bowls and glass jars with these loved-filled creams and gifted them to my loved ones. Then in early 2023, I headed to Europe/Africa. My family and friends asked me when I would be returning? They told me they were running low and were treating the creams like gold. I understood them because I too was making it for myself with whatever similar ingredients I could get my hands on in these countries. I did not want to run out!

After my year away from the United States, I returned in early 2024 and prepared these formulas. It was time to start selling them more broadly. The birth of Soma by Lourdes arrived. At the beginning, I sold person to person and then a local shop started selling it. In no time, I started selling at markets with friends. An online store picked up my brand. Then a couple more local stores stared carrying the products. Things were moving!

There have been challenges along the way, but I kept going one foot in front of the other. Taking each step I felt was a full body yes and pivoted as I felt the no’s. There is still plenty of room to grow and I’m motived by this.

I’ve since expanded the brand Lourdes to fashion, skincare and art. I design clothing and am slowly setting out my designs with “Lourdes Drape Tees” leading the way . Soma by Lourdes Skincare has our top seller face cream, the body butter and Lippy Lip Lip balm, products of which I myself use on the daily. Lourdes eARTh is watercolor art work that keeps flowing from me and I’m thrilled to share with the World. For now, originals are selling in local Texas stores and online you can purchase greeting cards.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Perfection has been my number one road block for years. I knew the products themselves were high quality and value, but I didn’t start out with the elegant jar design I envisioned. It was the look of the product that got me down. There’s nothing more annoying to a designer than putting out your work when you don’t feel it looks as good as you know it can. I hit a turning point in my life, where I made a decision to trust the process of slow growth. That shifted everything for me. I started out with the jars, labels and the branding look I could create at the time. I did not let that stop me. I keep adjusting as I grew and put profits towards up-leveling with each passing month. I still have more revisions to make. I trust we’ll get there!

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
There are two branches to my business. First there’s “Lourdes” the Life style brand offering limited, luxury products in fashion, skincare and art. Then there’s “Authentic Lourdes” with guidance services to support empaths and highly sensitive people (HSP) in clearly and safely developing your intuition especially in the wake of crossroads or rebuilding you life. Here I’ll be focusing on Soma by Lourdes the skincare line that helps the body do the healing.

There’s this reoccurring theme in my life, where I keep returning to the ancient wisdom practices that modern science has now explained. One ritual practice has changed my relationship to my soma – it means “body” in Greek. That practice is that of body oiling. When we lather our bodies in fats, they feed and nourish the microbiome of our skin, our body’s largest organ. Not only are you replenishing your skin’s health, but you’re also connecting to your body, the vessel that gets your smart brains around and your whole BEing. After spending thousands of dollars on skincare moisturizers for the face and body, I saw a space in the market for tallow based skincare formulas to shine. Since I was introduced to tallow through my post natal friend, I saw the potential this ingredient had to nourish and keep our skin barrier looking and feeling moisturized like no other.

I researched and experimented with the process from start to finish and was impressed with the results of my formulations. What sets Soma by Lourdes apart from other skincare is each jar holds a product full of loving energy each step of the way. The tallow is slowly rendered in house to clear the smell of game and yet retains the vitamins and minerals in the fat. Soma ingredients are hand selected from suppliers who source 100% quality ingredients from around the world. For example, the tallow is from Illinois USDA grade grass feed and grass finished cows. The beeswax is local from south Texas and the olive oil is straight from the olive region of Puglia in Italy.

As the ingredients are coming together, I infuse them with reiki, blessing, so much heart-love and intention to support your body’s systems to reGENErate at the cellular level. Soma by Lourdes clients keep reporting that these products have helped their body clear a variety of skin concerns. My favorite part is this skincare line is the rituals you get to create around connecting to and returning to touching and loving your body that holds the parts of who you BE and who you BE is LOVE. The most empowering reminder: You are LOVE.

What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
I can already see an intentional trend developing, one that I think will grow and then linger. A trend that is spanning across not only the skincare, beauty and fashion industries, but consumer products in general. At the neck braking speed our modern industry produces goods, there’s a call to return to the speed of wisdom. To slow down. To produce products with a story behind them, a rich intention and connection to love. The more people share their personal brands and produce smaller quantities and reject the story that we have to keep growing and that means year over year, we will end up with more options for quality products developed by each other. We can try more variety over time and enjoy what it is we have now. The artisan is on the rise. I am thrilled the machines are here to help and I see the rich experiences shared when we support the brave souls who put their work out there. That holds a signature that can be felt and appreciated, not only as a concept but as an emotion -that part of us that makes us human and is our unique intelligence.

In short, a trend towards producing living products.
