Today we’d like to introduce you to Robin Altson.
Hi Robin, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
When the pandemic hit in 2020, my usually packed schedule went completely blank. Bored and looking for a fun side project, a friend mentioned her brother’s business setting up surprise plastic flamingo flocks in North Texas. The idea immediately clicked—delivering a yard full of bright pink flamingos felt like the perfect way to bring people some much-needed joy. And Austin was built for something this fun and weird.
That’s how FlockATX was born.
What started as a fun hustle quickly became something much bigger. Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of celebrating huge milestones with people—like flocking the same incredible woman’s yard for her 100th, 101st, 102nd, and 103rd birthdays!
Those moments meant even more when life took a sharp turn in May 2024 with my breast cancer diagnosis. The irony of fighting a battle represented by a pink ribbon while running a pink flamingo business wasn’t lost on me. As treatment took a physical toll, my incredible friends stepped up without hesitation—taking over late-night deliveries and keeping FlockATX running while I healed.
FlockATX started as a way to beat boredom, but it’s grown into a tribute to friendship, community, and resilience. At the end of the day, it’s about the privilege of bringing people joy, one yard at a time.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Running a lawn-display business in Central Texas comes with its own very Austin set of challenges. Every summer, the heat bakes our soil into actual brick. Trying to push 100 thin metal flamingo legs into unwatered ground is a workout, but every bent wire and sweat-soaked setup is worth it.
To make summer setups happen, I usually ask clients to water the lawn beforehand. That gets pretty tricky when the person booking lives out of town and is trying to secretly coordinate watering without blowing the surprise!
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Alongside FlockATX, my main creative passion for nearly 20 years has been running FunKeyStrum Music, where I teach private piano and ukulele lessons. Over two decades, I’ve worked with students of all ages—whether they’re just starting or wanting to level up their skills. For me, it’s about having fun while building confidence and encouraging creativity.
Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
Community is everything.
When I was diagnosed with breast cancer in May 2024 and had to start treatment, I realized FlockATX wasn’t just my project anymore. My friends immediately stepped up to handle the late-night deliveries, keeping the business going while I healed. Leaning on them taught me the real power of community, delegation, and letting people show up for you when you need it most.
