Daily Inspiration: Meet Alexandra Perez

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alexandra Perez.

Hi Alexandra, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I’ve always loved doing hair and makeup, even as a teenager! I would always love to experiment with my hair and dye it different colors, doing things like split dyes with high contrasts. It was right around that time in my life that I enrolled in the cosmetology program at my high school at 15 years old. I grew up in El Paso, Texas and luckily my high school offered different vocational courses that you could join. Cosmetology was the one that I was interested in and the only one that officially licensed you at the end of it! It was a great opportunity, and I’ll always thank young Alex for taking advantage of that. The course was for 2 years, and we would have to stay late twice a week to complete the number of required hours in time. The day that I got my diploma, I also graduated from our cosmetology program and was licensed. I took some time away from hair but when I moved to Austin in November 2020, I decided it was time to begin my career with hair. I started at the salon at Ulta. They were patient with me and helped me relearn things that I had forgotten about. It’s a way different world than being in school, there is still so much to discover! I found some of my best friends there who would let me shadow them, they would mentor me, and they believed in me immensely. I worked there for 5 years, improving in my craft while meeting so many amazing people along the way, friends and clients! I’m so appreciative of the time that served in my life. In the early months of 2026 my friends brought dandy hair co. to my attention, I saw an opportunity and made the big decision to branch out grow, and evolve in my career. It was a scary decision but I am so happy I made the change. In the 7 months being at dandy, I have learnt so much! My clients are loving the space, and so am I! The overall environment is so nice and relaxing, very zen. We also like to be quirky, silly and have fun. We have an amazing crew here, we are constantly learning and I feel very cared about. It’s also great to still work with one of my best friends! My job feels very fun here at dandy!

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I would say it definitely has its challenges! Like building a clientele in the very very beginning, it can definitely some take time because you need to build those relationships. It’s kind of gradual, you start off not so busy in the beginning and that will increase over time. Theres also busy seasons, so I would say it’s kind of unpredictable too! I definitely felt like there were times I had to stay positive and believe in myself! Even with moving salons, building my schedule back up and staying booked and busy. Another obstacle is getting faster because I usually have worked slower in my past due to my perfectionism. Time management is something I stay actively working on, while staying true to myself and staying a perfectionist. It’s all about finding a balance!

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I honestly feel like I can get behind almost any project. I do want to stay pretty versatile. I especially love doing alternative haircuts like shags or very layered or textured styles with fun vivid colors, that’s where my heart and passion is! I‘ll also enjoy doing lots of long layered haircuts, different hair colors, color transformations, keratin and smoothing treatments, highlights and balayages. Funny enough, I do also enjoy blowouts, it’s very relaxing, for the client and for me too. When we’re both calm, listening to the white noise of the blowdryer, and I can just see the vision come to life!

What does success mean to you?
Success is wealth in love, support and happiness. They all connect to each other, and I think you do need all 3 to be successful. I think it’s important to always surround yourself with honest people who will care about you and love you, those who will be there for you and be genuine. Those kind of people who will back you up and believe in you.

That being said, I do have that! I am happy and I feel successful. I feel grateful for the people in my life, friends, family and clients who helped me get to where I am today. Everybody close to me in my life knows! I love and appreciate all of you.💗
