Hidden Gems: Meet AZ Moyer of AZ Does Taxes

Today we’d like to introduce you to AZ Moyer.

Hi AZ, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I started my career in public accounting, where I earned my CPA license and quickly realized it wasn’t the right fit for me. I wanted to have a more direct impact on my clients and be involved in their businesses, not just their year-end numbers.

That led me to the startup world, where I learned what it means to wear many hats. That experience gave me a real understanding of how a business operates day to day and what it takes to grow successfully. It also showed me how important it is to give employees room to grow and the freedom to live their lives to the fullest.

That lesson became one of our core values at AZ Does Taxes: we ‘work to live, not the other way around.’ It guides how we operate every single day.

Today, we help clients through proactive tax planning that puts more cash in their pockets and gives them peace of mind that their taxes are done on time, every time, with every available savings captured. We’re a remote team of five, which means my team can work from anywhere with Wi-Fi, and we take on client engagements that are both challenging and rewarding.

Looking ahead, our goal is to improve financial literacy across the country, and understanding your taxes is a great place to start.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It hasn’t been a smooth road, but it’s been the most rewarding journey of my career. One of the biggest challenges has been building the team: learning when to hire, who to hire, and how to onboard people well. Those are skills no one teaches you in accounting. I posted a job listing hoping to hire one new person and ended up meeting two candidates who were qualified and eager to learn. I ended up hiring both which put a constraint on cash, but ultimately was a shortcut to where we needed to be.

Today my days are split between managing and training my team, meeting with prospective clients, working on active engagements, and reviewing tax returns. It’s a real juggling act, but I’m learning something new every day. Every obstacle along the way has only confirmed that starting AZ Does Taxes was the best decision I could have made.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
AZ Does Taxes is an Austin-based tax and accounting firm serving individuals and small businesses. We handle tax preparation, tax planning, and advisory work, but what we’re really known for is being proactive. Most people only hear from their tax preparer once a year. We want to be the people our clients call before they make a big financial decision, not after.

We specialize in the work that tends to intimidate people: partnership returns, businesses with multiple entities, estate tax matters, and owners who need someone to help them see the full picture. We’ve also built a niche working with NIL athletes, who are often earning real income for the first time and need guidance on taxes they’ve never had to think about before.

What sets us apart is how we operate. We’re a fully remote team of five, built around our core value that we ‘work to live, not the other way around.’ A team that has room to live full lives brings more energy and care to every client. Our clients get a firm that’s responsive, thoughtful, and invested in their success, not a revolving door of preparers.

Brand-wise, I’m most proud that we’ve built a firm people actually enjoy working with. Taxes are stressful for most people, and we work hard to replace that stress with clarity: their returns are done on time, every time, with every available savings captured.

What I want readers to know is that taxes don’t have to be something you dread. Our bigger goal is to improve financial literacy, and understanding your own taxes is one of the best places to start. Whether you’re a small business owner, a growing family, or a young athlete navigating your first big paycheck, we’re here to help you keep more of what you earn and feel confident about your finances.

We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
My favorite childhood memories all revolve around sports. Some of my best days were spent at ballgames my dad was coaching: watching him lead from the sidelines, playing pickup football with the other kids in the stands, and high-fiving the high school players who seemed impossibly cool to me back then. And of course, there were the concession stand favorites. Candy, hot dogs, and those jumbo pickles.

It’s hard to pick just one memory, but what I loved most was being part of it all. I got to watch my dad lead his team, while I sat in the crowd with my mom and older sister, who supported our whole family rain or shine.
