Today we’d like to introduce you to Blakley Dancy.
Hi Blakley, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I’ve known since I was young that making people feel good about themselves was what I was meant to do. I started in Austin, doing weddings and makeup. Brides trusted me, and I learned how to calm a room and make someone feel understood.
In 2017 I moved to Houston to train at one of the city’s premier salons. I sharpened my color work and fell in love with extensions. I also noticed how much the quality of the hair itself matters, and how much of what was on the market fell short.
Houston was never the plan forever. Austin is home, and I wanted to be back here, working for myself. So I came back and became an independent stylist. Today I work downtown in a suite, with extensions at the center of what I do.
Working independently led me start Strande, a high quality custom extension line for professionals. It’s ethically sourced Eastern European and Asian hair, and it’s better quality than what I used to see available with more textures than I’ve found previously. I wanted to put something in my clients’ hands that I’d be proud to install and that holds up.
I’m still doing what I set out to do, helping people feel good about themselves. Now it starts with the hair itself and how it can empower other stylists.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Learning about how the big extension brands aren’t generally teaching the best practices, or selling the best quality of hair has been an interesting learning curve.
When you first learn you assume everything you are told from your first “certification” is correct. But once you have experience with different tools, techniques, perspectives and better product, you see what has been missing from the start and what has been missing from the experience.
Other lessons come from experience and what you go through with practice. The repetition and servicing different people will teach you more than any class is able to in a day or two.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am mostly known for blonding, color corrections and customized keratin bond extensions. People come to me for big changes and transformations. Or they come to me for healthy bright blonde maintenance. I’m very well versed in hair as a craft from cutting, coloring and extensions.
Now I hope to be used as a resource to help others find hair that can match their textures and colors conveniently!
Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
I see hair extensions continuing to expand. Every year more and more women seem to get into adding extensions and I do not see that stopping anytime soon. The technology and knowledge keep growing so the pay off of confidence extensions bring are hard to ignore after experiencing them correctly.
