Today we’d like to introduce you to Clay Vaughan.
Hi Clay, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I’m Clay Vaughan, CEO of Good Agency, a StoryBrand Certified marketing agency for founder-led service businesses, and founder of Good Studios, a photo and video production studio in San Marcos, serving Austin.
I started as a storyteller behind a camera. For years I thought the job was making something beautiful. Then I learned that beautiful doesn’t always mean effective. A great film or a gorgeous website can still leave customers confused about what you do and why it matters to them.
That changed everything. I became a StoryBrand Certified Guide in 2019 and started pairing creative work with a clear message and a real growth plan. I also serve as a Fractional Revenue Executive, which means I lead marketing and sales for growing companies without them hiring a full-time CMO or CRO.
I wrote a book called Velocity, built on a framework I call Heart, Heading, and Hustle, and I host the Good Business podcast, where founders talk about growing with integrity. My faith anchors all of it. Today Good Agency helps service businesses doing $1M to $200M a year turn marketing into revenue.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It hasn’t been a smooth road. The first lesson was that talent isn’t a business. I could make great work, but I had to learn sales, leadership, systems, and how to say no.
The second was getting out of my own way. I was the bottleneck in my company for a long time. Running Good Agency on EOS, building a leadership team, and handing real ownership to people better than me is what let us grow.
The third is one every founder knows: building something meaningful while staying present at home. I’m a husband and a dad first. Protecting that time takes as much discipline as anything I do in business.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Good Agency turns marketing into revenue for founder-led service businesses. Most owners we meet aren’t short on effort. They’re short on clarity. Their message is confusing, their website doesn’t convert, and their marketing and sales teams aren’t working from the same plan.
We fix that with:
StoryBrand Messaging
Revenue Growth Strategy
Website Design
SEO and Generative Engine Optimization, which helps businesses show up in AI answers from tools like ChatGPT and Google’s AI Overviews
Digital advertising
CRM and revenue systems
For companies that need a seasoned leader but aren’t ready for a full-time hire, I step in as their Fractional Revenue Executive.
The results are what we’re known for:
AAA Paving grew revenue 833% in three years, from $3M to $25M.
Safe House Project increased online giving by 120%.
Waterside Pools went from a 1% to a 10% website conversion rate.
Good Studios is our photo and video production studio in San Marcos, serving Austin and the Hill Country. We create brand films, commercial video, and photography that build trust and move people to act, for businesses and nonprofits alike.
We also train other leaders through the Velocity Framework Fractional Revenue Executive certification. Most Good Agency clients have a clear message and core marketing assets within 30 to 60 days, and see measurable pipeline growth within three to six months.
Can you share something surprising about yourself?
Before I sold my first business, a wedding film studio, I took a full month off. I was sure it would fall apart without me. Instead it grew 20% that month. If a company can’t run without its founder, the founder is the problem. I’ve built Good Agency and Good Studios around that lesson.
