Today we’d like to introduce you to Meghan Lim.
Hi Meghan, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I’m Meghan Lim, the creator behind Meghan Makes Money. Before becoming a full-time content creator, I was let go from three jobs in three years. After my last layoff, I spent nine months unemployed, applying for jobs and getting rejected. Going through that made me rethink how much I wanted to depend on one paycheck and start taking the income I could create for myself more seriously.
I was already making extra money through side hustles like pet sitting, and I started sharing my own money journey online. I talked about budgeting, saving, earning extra income, and the things I was learning along the way. A lot of my content came from my actual life and the steps I was taking to improve my finances. I started posting every day, even while I was still figuring out where it would lead.
Eventually, one of my videos went viral and brought in sales of my budget template. Seeing people buy something I had created helped me realize that content could become a business. I kept posting, learned how to monetize my content, and eventually committed to creating full time. Along the way, I grew my Instagram to 100,000 followers in seven months and built a six-figure business through brand partnerships, affiliate marketing, digital products, and coaching.
Today, I create content about personal finance, side hustles, and building a business. I also coach aspiring creators and run Money Makers Circle, a community where I help people improve their finances and explore ways to earn more money.
A big reason I share my story is that I know what it feels like to lose a job and feel unsure about what comes next. Building multiple income streams has given me more control over my work and my time, and I want to help other people create that flexibility for themselves. Whether someone wants to make a little extra money, pay off debt, or eventually work for themselves, I want to show them the practical steps that helped me get started.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
No, it definitely wasn’t a smooth road. There were plenty of times when I doubted myself, especially when I was posting every day and wasn’t growing as quickly as I hoped. It was hard to be patient with content creation when I needed money to pay my bills.
The biggest struggle was supporting myself after losing my job. For about seven months, I was in survival mode. I was applying for jobs left and right while taking whatever work I could find, including working as a barback and a barista at a matcha shop. I continued pet sitting and juggling side hustles to make ends meet. Those jobs helped me get by, but I still felt like I was constantly trying to keep my head above water.
I remember having less than $100 in my bank account before attending FinCon, a conference for financial content creators. Going felt like a huge risk given my financial situation, but I wanted to learn how to become a better creator and make this work. Honestly, it ended up being one of the best investments I’ve ever made in myself. That conference was a turning point, and afterward, I had a video go viral that helped me build the business I have today.
There were moments when I wanted to quit because I was putting so much effort into something without knowing when it would pay off. I had to keep reminding myself to give it a chance and keep going. Looking back, the hardest part was continuing to show up while I was still struggling financially and didn’t have the results to reassure me that it would work.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Meghan Makes Money LLC?
My business, Meghan Makes Money, is a personal finance and content creation brand focused on helping people manage their money, earn more, and create more options for themselves. Through my content as @meghanmakesmoney, I share practical advice about budgeting, saving, paying off debt, side hustles, and building an online business. I’m especially passionate about showing people how skills and experiences they already have can become another source of income.
What sets my brand apart is how much of it comes from my own life. I’ve shared the experience of losing my job, working minimum-wage jobs, pet sitting to make ends meet, and eventually building a business as a full-time creator. I talk openly about the mistakes, costs, and decisions along the way because those details are often what make money conversations useful. I also bring my perspective as a Filipina American woman and daughter of immigrants, which is an important part of who I am and how I connect with my audience.
Beyond my free content, I created a budgeting template to help people organize their finances and one-on-one coaching for aspiring creators who want to build and monetize their content. I also run Money Makers Circle, an online community where we work on financial goals, explore ways to earn more, and learn together through live calls and discussions. On the brand side, I partner with companies to create relatable, educational content about products and services relevant to my audience.
One thing I’m especially proud of is that more than 5,000 people have purchased my budget template. I’ve also built a six-figure business around sharing what I know and what I’m learning. Having something I created become both a useful resource for other people and a meaningful source of income for me has been a huge accomplishment.
What I want readers to know is that my brand is about making financial progress feel approachable. Whether someone is trying to get their budget together, make their first extra $1,000, or turn content creation into a business, I want to give them practical ideas and resources they can actually use. Having more control over my income has given me more control over my life, and that’s what I want to help others work toward.
Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
The most important lesson I’ve learned along my journey is to never quit and follow your dreams. As cheesy as it sounds, manifestation is real, and you can make anything happen as long as you put the work into it.
I think with our society and generation, we have an issue with instant gratification, but if you start thinking long term and stop thinking and expecting to grow really fast, you can really make anything happen. For example, if you want to be a content creator, start committing to posting every day, or if not every day, 3 to 5 times a week. Just have some form of consistency.
It’s the same way with going to the gym. If you want to gain muscle, go to the gym a couple times a week, and if you want to lose weight, eat fewer calories more consistently. The biggest lesson I learned is that anything you want in life doesn’t just happen magically. It comes with consistent effort, and if you can maintain some level of consistency in your life, then you will be way further along than most people.
