Today we’d like to introduce you to Sherry Hamby.
Hi Sherry, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Hi Austin! I’m “hair’ and loving my new city! I got to Austin in a moving truck LOL and I got to be at Bex and Co Salon by fortunate timing and research. As far as being a hairdresser that was in the stars from the beginning. Even as a child I was endlessly mixing food colorings, cutting the hair off of dolls and pets, and that one unfortunate neighbor boy. (many apologies York!) It was hairdressing calling from the beginning.
Long story short. I applied to two assisting programs at two top salons as soon as I enrolled in Cos. school. One assisting program was for haircutting and the other was for coloring. After I was liscensed I entered into a 2 year apprenticeship program and trained extensively all over the country. Shortly after I acquired my own apprentices and after 7 years I opened my own salon. Won some awards, styled, some famous heads and learned alot about the industry. It has been an amazing journey.
After falling in love with Austin (originally from the Chicago area). I sold my salon and moved in 2020. My journey continues in this amazing city. I am celebrating the humans and hair that I meet. My aesthetic is natural looking color and easy free flowing hair cuts. My expertise is blonding, dimensional brunettes, natural grey blending, balayage and foilwork. My focus in on the health of the hair and ease of wear. I use shears and a razor and I specialize in fine hair. Expect the highest level of customer service without pretense.
You can find me at Bex and Co Salon on Burnet working alongside talented women in a comfortable and welcoming atmosphere. I would love to meet you and your hair!
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The road less traveled in never smooth. Above all else, the global pandemic has been a professional and social struggle for us all. I feel honored to be in this profession at this time. I am able to touch people in meaningful ways beyond hair. I know I am on the right road because daily affirmations are happening all the time. I am constantly putting gratefulness out into the universe. I will continue to try to be a positive part of my new city. I hope that we will all emerge thoughtful and more connected. (with great haircuts and color, too )
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I specialize in seeing the individual from a holistic perspective. I specialize in highly personalized haircuts and believable natural color.
My haircuts are seamless and easy to wear.
I am unique (as we all are) in the way I use Ayurveda in my consultation and approach.
I feel that my industry offers a unique opportunity to touch humanity and provide outer beauty while focusing on inner wellness. This belief has been with me since the beginning and in 2008, I graduated with my Ayurvedic Degree and become a professional member of The National Ayurvedic Medical Association. I incorporate aspects into my daily life personally and professionally.
I am in the process of creating an educational program that will share approaches for consultations, color formulation and mindful haircutting. I am always seeking ways to elevate my craft and my industry.
Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
Oh goodness so much… The most important thing is to be true to your craft. Authenticity is so important when you are developing your skills as an artist. Be true to you.
Seek a space (and people) that will enrich your energy and expand your knowledge.
Remember the first 10,000 colors and haircuts are the hardest.
Keep going, keep loving and keep learning. See beauty in everything and everyone.
