Today we’d like to introduce you to Deanna Johnson.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I am Deanna Johnson, the founder of Tax Charm. Tax Charm is a boutique tax and consulting firm located here in Austin, Texas. We also work with clients virtually across the United States. I created Tax Charm out of my love for the small business community. Our mission is to make tax and accounting guidance accessible to all small business owners, solo entrepreneurs, and freelancers.
I moved to Austin in 2011 from my hometown Southfield, Michigan (a suburb of Detroit). I had up and quit my management job a month before making the decision to move to Austin. When I boarded a plane to permanently move here, it was first time ever traveling to the state of Texas! I am still here, living and running Tax Charm a decade later.
Moving to Austin on a whim was one of the best decisions that I made for my personal and professional growth; Living in this ever-growing city has been a tremendous journey of supportive community, upward mobility, unsurmountable grief (I lost my Mom unexpectedly in March of 2017) and unparalleled personal growth.
Because of the risk that I took to move to Austin, Texas, I was blessed with the amazing opportunity to embark on my journey in entrepreneurship and help other small business owners along the way with setting up a strong tax and accounting foundation for their business.
I am also continuing my family’s legacy of entrepreneurship.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
In January of 2020, I took another big risk and quit my 9-5 corporate job to run Tax Charm full time. I made my entrepreneurial leap a couple of months before the pandemic changed not only the world but the lives of small business owners forever.
As we all know, with great risk comes great reward. Not only has the pandemic shaken up the world, it has also spurred a tremendous interest in people seeking professional tax preparation and accounting services. The SBA, government and local community has flooded the economy with small business grants, PPP loans and stimulus payments with the intent to help small business owners survive the financial toll that the pandemic had taken on their future.
Because of the financial and tax filing requirements that came with the loan and grant programs, the small business and freelancer community began to realize h the importance of having good financial records and accurate tax returns. Also, the administration was constantly making changes to tax laws and regulations in an effort to provide stimulus and an economic boost to the economy.
This gave me the tremendous opportunity to help my clients, the small business community, and family members access small business loans, community grants, stimulus payments and unemployment aid to stay financially afloat in these trying times.
This opportunity to help other small business owners and my community makes all the risks and hard work worth it. I am fulfilling Tax Charm’s mission of making tax preparation and accounting guidance accessible to all. I am truly grateful for the opportunity that I was able to leverage to help small business owners like myself access the financial resources and programs that was meant for them!
We’ve been impressed with Tax Charm, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Tax Charm was founded on the principles of community, service, and entrepreneurship. We have a real mission of helping small business owners, freelancers, and solo entrepreneurs in their business by providing them expert tax preparation, bookkeeping and business consulting.
Who else deserves credit in your story?
My journey as an Austin transplant and small business owner has been full of tremendous support. Tax Charm would not be where it is today without my clients and accountability partners who support me, give me their business, refer their friends to me and force me to continue to grow professionally.
Having entrepreneurial parents has also played a great role in my personal and professional success!
