Rising Stars: Meet Madison Baker

Today we’d like to introduce you to Madison Baker.

Hi Madison, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I grew up in Canton, Texas, which is a quaint rural town about an hour east of Dallas. At a very young age, I remember having big aspirations. When asked the age-old question of what I wanted to be when I grew up, I became accustomed to just saying “myself,” because where I’m from, making music professionally isn’t really acknowledged as a sound career choice, and many folks have a lot to say about it— often little that’s encouraging. I was singing before I spoke complete sentences and was fascinated by professional musicians and creatives and the art of performance. Though I was heavily influenced by country music due to my surroundings, I grew up listening to a lot of old R&B. In my young teen years, I grew obsessed with powerhouse pop artists like Beyoncé, Lady Gaga, and Adele.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I knew in my adolescence that as soon as I had an opportunity to leave east Texas and venture out on my own, I would. That opportunity came in the form of an acceptance letter to The University of Texas at Austin, where I studied Communications Studies focusing on HR. During my time at UT, I had a difficult time forging my path and figuring out exactly what contributed most to who I was. I stopped singing and making music entirely and struggled immensely with mental health issues and substance abuse issues. I completed my bachelor’s degree in 2018 after a rocky but rewarding college experience. I worked as a server/bartender throughout school and upon graduating was offered a full-time bar position. Around this time is when I decided to take the leap and pursue music professionally, as I’d always dreamt of doing. Between 2018-2019, I wrote my first original songs, took them to the studio, and released them independently in the summer of 2019.

Soon after, I began writing songs for my debut EP, titled “Boundary,” with my partner & two other very close friends and collaborators. My team and I had the masters for the EP ready for release in January 2020, but two months later, all of our release plans drastically changed with the onset of the global pandemic. It has been a very difficult road characterized by grief and heartbreak, but we made it through in one piece and for that, I am extremely grateful. We released a full production music video for my single “Don’t Know How,” followed by the “Boundary” EP release in March 2021. Since those releases, I’ve been playing shows at numerous local venues in Austin on a monthly basis, in addition to managing a salon in south Austin (Headspace Salon & Coop) and bartending on the weekends. I’m currently working to save money to write & record a full-length album and eventually go on tour.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a queer & nonbinary independent pop artist. I primarily write and sing but am very interested in learning more about production and arrangement. I am most proud of my bold presence, ingenuity, and ability to take very personal experiences and turn them into songs that I can share with others. The most rewarding part of creating music for me are the connections it allows me to have with others.

Alright so before we go can you talk to us a bit about how people can work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
