Today we’d like to introduce you to Tori Abell.
Hi Tori, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Hello! My name is Tori Abell and I’m a senior in high school. I discovered my passion for photography at a young age, taking my mom’s old camera with me everywhere. Something about being able to capture a moment in time to look back on and feel the emotions of that specific snapshot in time really excited me, especially through candids and portraits. As a sophomore and junior in high school, I began organizing artistic portrait photoshoots with my friends- with a specific goal in mind: to be published. After months of shooting, editing, and submitting photos, I was finally featured on Vogue Italia’s PhotoVogue, TWICE! At that point, I began to recognize God had given me a gift, the art of photography, and I knew I wanted to use this gift to capture and help others see the God-given beauty and uniqueness in themselves. So, I began to photograph more candid style photos, including couples, families, and portraits, and eventually weddings. Memories are very important to capture, not only for the people to recognize their individual beauty but also for the future generations to get a glimpse into the past. Everyone has uniqueness ready to be captured, and when a family or individual trusts me to be an important part of their story, I look back on my hard work with gratitude that it has brought me to these moments today.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
Every achievement and opportunity comes with struggles along the way. From struggling to balance photography with school and being an elite level athlete as well as health issues to facing difficulties during the covid-19 pandemic, my photography business has had its trials. Despite this, it has only made me a more compassionate and understanding person. You never know what struggles someone may be going through, therefore it is important to show compassion and kindness to everyone. There are many who might not outwardly struggle but could be greatly impacted by your empathy and willingness to lend a helping hand.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Through my passion of capturing candid photos of important moments, I have turned my artistry into a business to help others not only remember the important moments in their lives but also to help them recall the emotions of the specific moments when looking at the photo. I am most proud of the impact I have been able to make in people’s lives. Something that sets me apart from others is I’m just as excited as whoever I’m photographing. Photoshoots aren’t meant to be dull and boring, having a fun photoshoot is important in the process of preserving memories too! If you ask me “can we get in the water for a few photos?” You better expect me to be following you in, camera in hand, always ready for a fun adventure.
Another aspect of photography which I have enjoyed is product/branding photography, there’s so many fun ways to have a styled photoshoot, in addition to candid photoshoots.
What were you like growing up?
Growing up, I tried a lot of new sports, hobbies, etc., trying to discover my passion. At an early age, I was on swim team and had a sewing business. I knew early on that I enjoyed being self-employed and having my own business, but if you were to go back in time to five years ago and tell me that I would no longer be doing ballet and specializing in nature photos, but would be a national level weightlifting competitor who photographs weddings, I probably wouldn’t believe you. Although, ever since I was little I have had an obsession with weddings… I think my younger self would be proud of me, I have the dream career!
