Today we’d like to introduce you to Dylan Mott.
Hi Dylan, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I started tattooing a little over 14 years ago, in Harrisonburg Virginia. I’m originally from Richmond VA, so I moved back for a long time before landing in Austin as a new place to start. After arriving, I quickly started at a studio named Affinity before helping turn it into what is now Sacrament Tattoo on 6th st. We parted ways, bounced around to Golden Age tattoo, where I met my two amazing Co-owners of Companion Tattoo, Nikki Jo and Chloe Marie. I finally feel like I am where I’m supposed to be and with who I’m supposed to be around.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has not, tattooing is never smooth. It is an amazing career where I’ve met the best people, but that also comes with some of the worst. Getting clientele was always a struggle for me, especially while bouncing around shops, cities, and to some long-term clients, Style. Being part of the LGBTQIA+ community has also made it a bit harder, at least at the beginning. Lots of name-calling, “shit-talking” and over lack of empathy was a big deal in the beginning. Thankfully the community has started to turn that around, but there is still a very long way to go.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m a Tattoo artist. I like to think I specialize in an American Traditional style of tattooing, but I think it’s a bit more illustrative. Since moving to Texas, I have definitely embraced the cowboy/girl/pal imagery and I like to think it really changed the direction of my work.
I don’t know if it’s something to be proud of or something I need to work on more. I am known to be quite fast at tattooing, it’s brought up almost every appointment I have. Much to my work roommate Stevie’s side-eyes from hearing about it every day. I should probably work on slowing down now and then.
Also, I feel like do cowgirl tattoos at least twice a week at this point, so that is a noteworthy attribute, I suppose.
The crisis has affected us all in different ways. How has it affected you and any important lessons or epiphanies you can share with us?
I’ve learned how absolutely little care most people take for general cleanliness. As a tattoo artist, some things are just second nature, like don’t sneeze in your hand to just continue doing what you’re doing.
Also, being in a one-on-one situation with my clients since covid (not bringing friends or significant others to appointments) has really made it easier and more pleasant to pay attention to people’s actual needs during appointments. I can honestly say I might now go back to allowing others.
