Today we’d like to introduce you to Chris Cox.
Hi Chris, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
A fortuitous shift at a now gone brewpub downtown led to my meeting the folks who were on a popular public access show in Austin called “The Reel Deal” that reviewed new release films in a conversational humorous style. Making a plea to take the place of a departing member, I joined their crew for several years. It was beginning to build a fan and friend base that would grow more when the host of the show developed us into animated shorts on the web that ended up getting to sold to a company in NYC and it became in 2007 the popular website Spill.com where I voiced the character of “Cyrus” and did thousands of reviews, podcasts, created new shows, did flash animation, and wrote news stories and reviews. Eventually, the site came to a close and I continued on with the group conversational format of podcasting with my own website Oneofus.net in July of 2013. The new website encouraged more of a larger group of podcasters, more shows, and much more regular content and we continue on today with multiple daily reviews and shows posted primarily focusing on tv and film reviews.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Most certainly there were struggles along the way, both with some personality conflicts during the Spill.com run and a steep learning curve when it came to running a WordPress based website for oneofus.net. The preponderance of podcasting in the years since Spill.com was an early adopter of the format has made the competition stiff and getting noticed that much harder.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’ve been fascinated with film/tv and the discussion of it since Siskel and Ebert first was discovered by myself at a young age. Between that and a love of comedy, I’ve developed a study of the group dynamic in criticism that I find infinitely more entertaining/revealing than when it is done with a single voice. Over time I’ve found myself really learning to value and appreciate how important it is to have different voices from different backgrounds, genders, and races be able to discuss art together in a friendly if irreverent forum. Despite the difficulties inherent with running 95% of the website on my own and the constant work that is involved, and especially with how in an increasingly crowded online world of film and television commentary getting heard can be next to impossible, I’m proud of the years of the content we’ve created, the thoughtfulness and creativity of all the people who’ve worked with me over the years on it, and the friendships that have been created because of it.
Do you any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
I think back to my childhood, which I was lucky enough to have an almost entirely positive one, and it’s hard to pick just one beloved memory. Certainly going to see Star Wars when it first came out in the theater with my father and us both being able to enjoy it and discuss it afterwards together holds up as a cherished moment in time.
