Check Out Mary Osborne’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mary Osborne.

Hi Mary, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’m an Occupational Therapist and certified positive care approach consultant with ten years of experience in dementia care. I’ve worked in a variety of different settings, and the settings that I have always enjoyed the most were memory care and long-term care. One of the first places I worked as an Occupational Therapist was in a skilled nursing facility in North Carolina. I worked with an Occupational Therapist who taught me all about dementia care, the importance of quality of life and implementing the type of therapy that would really make a difference to those living with dementia. I saw the importance of what I could do, the change I could bring about when I focused on the person living with dementia’s current abilities! After working with this therapist early in my career, it really changed the way I approached my job as an OT over these past years and how I cared for those living with dementia. Over these past ten years, I’ve trained staff members and provided family members with the tools and strategies needed in order to better care for their loved ones who were living with dementia. This ultimately led me to creating my own Occupational Therapist consulting company called Your Dementia Therapist. My company is focused on helping family members and caregivers better care for their loved one who is living with dementia. I teach family members and caregivers effective approaches, how to address difficult behaviors, and provide personalized activity recommendations.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I launched my company in October 2021 and I’m so grateful for the many opportunities it has presented me with. The hardest part of this journey has been creating brand awareness that my type of service exists for family members & caregivers who are taking care of a loved one living with dementia. When someone hears that I’m an Occupational Therapist, they automatically assume I will be treating their loved one who is living with dementia. With my consulting company, my client is the family member/caregiver who is taking care of their loved one who is living with dementia. I work directly with the family member/caregiver to help THEM better serve their loved ones, so then everyone succeeds.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m an Occupational Therapist consultant who specializes in dementia care. I specialize in dementia care, and I’m known for my unique approach to dementia care that has helped both those living with dementia and dementia caregivers. I’m most proud that I created this consulting company to help better address the needs of family members and caregivers. I love that I’m able to combine my expertise & experience in dementia care from these past ten years to better serve and impact the lives of others.

What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
