Hidden Gems: Meet Andromeda Vega Rubio of A. Vega Rubio Law

Today we’d like to introduce you to Andromeda Vega Rubio.

Hi Andromeda, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Unfortunately, I did not grow up in the most healthy and functional household; Domestic violence was a daily given, and my father made no attempts to hide it from us. In fact, any interference from us earned us a beating as well. Neighbors would hear the fights but no one ever got involved. I remember feeling powerless and scared; not to mention abandoned by all those that knew what was going on, both family and strangers. It wasn’t until much later that I learned that a prosecutor could have stepped in and “saved” us had someone just picked up the phone and reported the abuse. So I went to law school and became a prosecutor. I began my career at the Williamson County Attorney’s office, where I was shocked to learn the sheer amount of cases each prosecutor has on a daily basis. Although I would try my best to come through all the evidence in all of the cases, it was almost impossible to ensure that all my offers were in fact doing justice. I found myself in conflict because even though I was protecting those who could not protect themselves, specially when it came to family violence cases, I was not sure that I wasn’t extending an offer to someone that was innocent just because of the time pressure. So I had a hard decision to make, and it was surprisingly easy – I decided to leave the prosecutor’s office and to focus on one case at a time, ensuring that justice is actually being served and that no innocent is getting a conviction just because they don’t have the money to pay for a fancy attorney, or because they are scared that they may get deported if they don’t act quickly, or maybe they just want to get out of jail. There are so many reasons why people simply plead to a case, even though the prosecutor can’t prove it, even though they are innocent. So today, that is what my firm does: we ensure that everyone, no matter what the immigration status is, no matter what your finances look like, gets a fair shot at justice.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
It has definitely not been a smooth road. I was born and raised in Germany, so English was not my first language. I met my husband in Germany, he was stationed there while serving in the Army. In 2016 it was time to prepare for his retirement, so we moved back to Killeen in the summer, and I had to make quick decisions. I studied for the LSAT and applied to the closest schools. I was accepted into Baylor Law School, and so my journey began. Every day, I had to drive from Killeen to Waco, about an hour drive, one way. I wasn’t able to move to Waco because my husband was working in Killeen, and my three kids were in school in Killeen. Luckily, I met Maria Toscano, an attorney that works with me now. She also lived in Killeen, so we were able to commute together. She too has three little ones so we would read case law to each other in the car or simply discuss the assigned readings. My biggest struggle, however, was the language, my English was still very basic, so it took me twice as long to get through a case than anyone else. Fortunately for me, I had a very supportive husband that took on the mother role as well while I was in Law School, and my children stepped up to the challenge as well by demanding less from me attending to their homework and their chores.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
A. Vega Rubio Law focuses mainly on Criminal Law. It consists of three female attorneys from different backgrounds which allows us to better understand our clients. Because of our backgrounds, we serve not only English-speaking clients but also Spanish and German-speaking clients. I believe that we are different than other firms because we make it a point to give each of our case a personalized touch. Each case is unique and different – even if it is the same charge, and our clients notice that. They feel listened too and appreciate the time and effort we put not only in preparing their defense but also in the attention to details, the emails and text messages we sent to make sure that they know what is going on with their cases, the longer appointments where we discuss every point of strength and weakness in their case so that they can make educated decisions about their case. Thus, our brand is simple – we treat each and every case, no matter what the allegations are as if we are the ones being accused of it – that is what makes us so successful when it comes to resolution of our client’s cases.

Who else deserves credit in your story?
There is a long list of people that deserve credit, to narrow it down though, I would say my husband, Javier Andrade, for being my biggest supporter throughout my career. He helped me follow my dreams and took on not only the financial burdens but also my half of parenting during law school. Yandel, Remiel, and Addisyn, for stepping up and supporting me while I was in Law School and even still as I continue to build up A. Vega Rubio Law. Maria Toscano, for helping me catch up in my readings, being my personal tutor and for whispering answers during class, and now for working with me at A. Vega Rubio Law. Professor Powell at Baylor Law School, for being so very understanding of my situation during the most difficult time of my Law School Career, my third year. Beth Toben the first person to give me an insight as to what it means to be a truly good prosecutor, for always picking up the phone and listen to my complaints or answer my questions. Robyn Leatherwood, for always supporting me and for believing in my dream and joining me at A. Vega Rubio Law. And the Williamson County Attorney’s Office; for giving me an opportunity to learn, for guiding me and lifting me up whenever I would fail; specially, Thomas Velez for teaching me how to be a fair prosecutor and to not let my past experiences cloud my judgement.
