Meet Carrie McHale Reed of McHale Group

Today we’d like to introduce you to Carrie McHale Reed.

Hi Carrie, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My joy of teaching and developing others stems back to my childhood when I lined up all my dolls and stuffed animals for “school.” Even as young as age 8, I wrote the curriculum, facilitated the class and assigned homework. My passion only grew over the years as I attended college and graduate school. In fact, in college I tried out and made the Texas Tech Leadership Academy Team, a group of students who organized campus-wide events for students, all to give us leadership experience at an early age. I also served as president of my undergraduate service organization, Alpha Phi Omega. All of these experiences continued to cultivate my passion and love for leading and developing others.

I spent the first part of my career climbing the corporate ladder serving in leadership roles in learning and development. My work has spanned many industries, including healthcare, telecom, advertising, education and many others.

I have had the privilege of leading some stellar teams and working alongside colleagues who have helped me learn and grow over the years. My favorite roles were always the ones where I could try new strategies and practices to help employees discover and develop what truly makes them shine as individuals.

All of this experience certainly helped me build a strong bench strength in organizational development, leadership and change management. However, it was the final puzzle piece of serving as a senior leader at EY that gave me that added drive to becoming an entrepreneur. It was there where I learned end-to-end business development and managed a large client portfolio.

A couple of years into being a “road warrior” I decided it was time to forge out on my own. In the aftermath of 911, I engaged in a double-whammy business set up. I partnered with some Aussies from down under to launch an assessment company (still active today). We provided company leaders with critical data on the experience their employees and customers alike were having with their company. I continued to work that travel muscle as we traversed across Europe, Australia, Asia, South Africa, and the US.

From the challenges the assessment company surfaced in corporate culture, communication, leadership and team development, McHale Group, LLC was born. The organizational leaders we engaged with needed frontline guidance to help them navigate employee and customer needs.

Over the past 19 years, McHale Group, LLC has grown into a robust consultancy with team members across the US, Canada, India, and Philippines. We serve organizations in strategizing change, opening up the lines of communication between leaders and teams, and provide skill development through a suite of online/on demand learning and in person workshops and coaching.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The decision to leave a secure corporate job to launch my own business right after 911 shocked half my colleagues, while the other half surely thought I was crazy. I did it anyway. I found myself flying halfway across the world two weeks after 911 when they re-opened air travel. There were five of us on the whole plane! It was daunting to start a business during a time when the country was in shock and unsure of what lay ahead. I did it anyway! If we don’t forge ahead despite our fears, we will still be talking about our dreams instead of actually living them.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
What sets me (Founder and President of McHale Group, LLC) apart from others is the care I take in customizing each client experience to best fit their learning style, needs and goals.
