Today we’d like to introduce you to Whitney Davis.
Whitney, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
In the fall of 2019, I was working in the corporate world as a customer service manager for a new home construction trade company. I worked salary and I was a single mom and I worked a lot of overtime. In November 2018, my father passed away unexpectedly and it really woke me up to all the things I was missing out on by working so much and spending so little time with my family and loved ones. I decided that in there to take the leap and open my own business, knowing that I would spend a lot of time working still however I would be making my own schedule. During that time, I was dating right now husband and my son was in middle school. I launched Ginger Roots website in February 2020 and all in that one year, we got engaged built a house and then got married. I may have bit off more than I could chew starting a business during such crazy time, not to mention Covid, but it seems God knew what he was doing and really guided me through the entire process.
My bio online:
Hey y’all, I’m Whitney… owner of Ginger Roots Boutique. Not in front of the camera often and usually running around town or between home & the shop, fulfilling my wifely, motherly, and business-ownerly (made that one up) duties… so I wanted to pause for a moment and introduce myself to those new followers we have… and just in case our loyal base doesn’t know me yet! I’m 35, married the cowboy of my dreams, James, just over a year ago. Together we have three amazing children, a 15 years old son, Austin, a 13 years old daughter, Lilly, and a nine years old daughter, Mila. All three are active in sports and other extracurricular activities, which keeps us running around like headless chickens, but we wouldn’t have it any other way! We currently live on the line of Leander & Liberty Hill, TX & also own and operate a cattle ranch outside of Goldthwaite, TX, where we plan to build our forever home once our oldest graduates from high school! I was raised in a ranching family with strong Texas roots and values, all of which I do my best to convey through our brand at GRB. As I often say, we are a way of life, not just a fashion statement! I worked in the corporate world for many years prior to taking the leap into the business ownership life. Shortly after losing my father in 2019, I felt compelled to live my dream and make my own schedule so do not miss out on anything in my kids’ lives and to relish in the love of family and friends as much as possible. Ginger Roots Boutique was born in December of 2019 & from then on, its been a whirlwind of learning & growing, ups & downs, successes & failures… but proudly, I’ll say more ups than downs & more successes than failures, all due to the good Lord’s blessing, support from my loved ones, and a lot of hard work! In January of 2020, we opened our doors in Liberty Hill, and I maintain that that was one of the best decisions I could have ever made. We have been welcomed so warmly by the LH community and we truly feel at home here! Whether you are a local or online follower/customer from afar, from the bottom of my Texas heart, thank you all for being a part of my dream & journey!
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I would say generally that the process Has gone smoothly. Yes, there have been tons of challenges and huge expenses as there always are in starting a business however when you’re doing something you’re so passionate about the answers seem to just appear if you work hard at it and if you feel strongly about it. I had the website up for about a year when we opened our brick and mortar here in Liberty Hill, which was a huge leap of faith but ended up being one of the best decisions I’ve made for ginger roots boutique. Yes, there have been slow months and it has all been a huge learning process, however I’m learning as I go and I feel like we are right where we need to be.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
We are a contemporary western wear boutique in central Texas. Forever inspired by the lovely ladies at junk gypsy in round top, I have always had the dream to open a shop like this. First of all, I needed something that would support my shopping habit! And second, I knew I needed an outlet for my creative brain, but most importantly GRB stands firm in preserving the cowboy way in Texas during an era where the cowboy dream is dying. We specialize in putting a western twist or flare on just about any look. It’s important to note that western wear can be worn every day of the week in any circumstance, so we are trying to break down that cliché of western wear only been acceptable to wear to say the rodeo. I was raised in a very traditional Texas family on Ranches, around country music and church bazaar‘s. The idea of western vibes to me is easy however I know it’s not that way for everyone here but that’s where I come in. I specialize in styling Looks for any occasion. Something that sets us apart is that we try to create an experience at GRB, not just a place to come shop. We have a mechanical pony out front so it’s one of the first things you see when you come to our store and we always have great music going and often events planned with snacks and drinks but most of all our big personality makes sure that a customer leaves smiling. We have a styled photoshoot once a month where approximately 10 to 15 girls that are dubbed the GRB models get together and we take a lot of awesome pictures there’s generally a theme. I spend about two weeks prepping for its first year and I do take all the photos and edit them myself, which is a new development, and art I’m working on perfecting. These photos are great for our website but I use them mostly for social media where we like to have a lot of fun keeping everyone in the loop on all the new things that are coming to our shop.
Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
I firmly believe you cannot have great success without great risk. This has been very hard for me because I am very conservative with my money, but opening a business like this costs a lot of money and in that, I have taken huge risks. I have crashed and burned on a lot of things however I would say that I have succeeded more than I’ve failed because of the risks that I’ve taken.
