Life & Work with Kathryn Welch

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kathryn Welch.

Hi Kathryn, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I have always had a creative outlet. My first business was wedding planning books where I created and designed an all-in-one workbook to wedding planning. After the creative process was over, I joined an incredible event planning company. Shortly after joining, I had my twins and decided to become a stay at home mom. As the twins got a little older, I needed something to get away. As a mom, it is easy to lose sight of yourself as your children become your entire world, especially as a stay at home like myself. I needed to find something to escape and recharge. Drawing and painting were never my strong suit, so I began experimenting with resin making drink coasters and canvas art. With Barbie shoes lying around, I threw them on a canvas with some gold leaf flakes and created my first piece (September 2020). I loved it!! It was colorful, it was different, it was everything I had imagined. Shortly after, I got pregnant with our third child, threw that piece in the back of a closet and stayed away from resin my entire pregnancy.

Once the baby was three months, I needed to feel human again. I started making pieces on a small scale, gained a following, and began working on a larger scale.

I love what I do! I love getting to play with bright colors that make me feel happy. I love that I have a “job” outside of my kids. It also brings me closer to them – they LOVE helping me sort and pair shoes!

I continue to create art daily; I’m back selling my wedding books and still work events throughout the year!

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
This creative path has not always been easy. The pandemic has and continues to put a strain on procuring materials. Resin is a very difficult medium, where everything has to align perfectly – ratios, temperature, humidity, etc. It has taught me to be extremely patient and prepare for unforeseen circumstances that will happen. Learning the importance of taking the extra time to ensure quality over quantity and to not put deadlines on myself.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a mixed media 3D artist. I create 3D dimension primarily out of colorful miniature plastic shoes. These shoes are either displayed in a grid form or in a design on canvas sealed in epoxy resin. The resin gives an endless gloss finish making the elements stand out! I love how I have made ordinary everyday objects into art. Everything is art!

Any big plans?
Anything is possible! I look forward to growing in all aspects of my life – as an individual, as a family and as an artist. I am constantly thinking of new ideas, mediums, and elements to create new art and designs. I look forward on ways to challenge myself and ways to give back.
