Check Out Rachel English’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Rachel English.

Hi Rachel, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My parents are both very creative people–my dad is an inventor and my mom a designer. Watching them tinker with tools and models around the house-shaped my appetite for artistry at a young age. Once I got into college, pursuing a fine art degree ushered me into the formal art world and laid the foundation for my present career as a painter.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The road has been pretty smooth–when I look back, I see lots of slow and steady growth and not much to complain about. Just recently, however, some events in my personal life upended the status quo, as it were. I’m a single mom now, so I often battle with the uncertainty of sticking with my line of work as a full-time artist; maybe if I got a desk job that pays regularly, I wouldn’t worry so much about how I’m going to provide a good life for my daughter. I’ve endured many sleepless nights stewing in anxiety and self-doubt, and sleep is already hard to come by when raising a baby. Even so, that struggle has spurred me to become more creative, focused, and gutsy than ever before–both in my studio practice and in motherhood. It’s hard but worth it.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m a realist painter inspired by the intersection of physical science, philosophy, and the skies. I paint cloudscapes, sunrises and sunsets, and the celestial sphere as well. By focusing on the skies, my work directs the viewer to gaze upon an elevated existential plane–something like the Sublime or a Cosmic Perspective. It’s all about being mindful of how much greater and more powerful Mother Nature is than ourselves and delving into how that outlook can connect us to our shared origination and a sense of universal belonging.

Before we go, is there anything else you can share with us?
I also teach private painting lessons and do custom/commissioned work.
