Today we’d like to introduce you to Zack Coats.
Hi Zack, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
My name’s Zack (AKA ZC3). Growing up, music was always a big part of my life. My dad would play the piano and sing for everyone at our house. Naturally, I gravitated towards it. Throughout my teen years, I started to dive deeper into music and I fell in love with it. I grew up in a house of 9 kids, so alone time was rare. I started recording in my closet with a microphone that plugged into my headphone jack on my phone. It wasn’t much, but it meant the world to me. Music was a way for me to escape the chaos. When I was 19, I moved from Northern Utah to Austin and decided to take things a bit more seriously. Over the years, I’ve slowly progressed. The quality has increased substantially and I feel like I’ve finally been able to create my own sound. I’m now 24. Am doing more and more shows. Making some of my best songs to date. Creating music videos. Started my own merch line. And most importantly, enjoying it now more than ever.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I laughed out loud when I read this question. No. It has not been a smooth road. Growing up in Utah making hip hop/rap music was not ideal. I was the black sheep. I stood out like a sore thumb. And that really took a toll on the way I viewed myself. I was embarrassed to show anybody my music. I was always facing constant judgment just due to the way I looked/dressed. I didn’t dare share my music with people. It is in fact, the most vulnerable part of me.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I make music. I specialize in vocals & lyrics. Words have always come easy to me. Writing a song has never been challenging. It just comes naturally. It’s how I express myself. Word play is so satisfying to me. I love making words fit together in ways you couldn’t think to be possible. I’m probably most known for my melodies, I have a very specific sound. I like to look at it as a hybrid of rapping/singing. I love intertwining the two. I don’t ever like to do too much of one or the other. Whenever my music comes on, people know it’s me. My sound is distinctly different. Between that and my ability to write is probably what I’m most proud of and what sets me apart.
Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
I don’t have any advice as far as finding a mentor or networking. As far as social media goes, just try to be consistent and interactive. Honestly, if I could tell a younger version of myself anything, I’d say don’t worry about the numbers. If you get too caught up in results, you start making music for all the wrong reasons. I don’t look at making music as a business venture. It’s a creative outlet. If you focus too much on plays/exposure, you lose sight of what really matters. Which is just being the most authentic version of yourself and reflecting that through the music. And when you learn to do that, It’s a beautiful thing.
