Today we’d like to introduce you to Francis Blume.
Hi Francis, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I got a guitar when I was 13 years old with the intent to learn as many Beatles songs as I could. I quickly realized that Beatles tunes were not as easy to play as I thought they would be, so I took the few chords that I knew and started writing my own songs. Songwriting became a very helpful outlet for me through my high school years. That is such a pivotal time for young people, and I was able to take all of my experiences and focus them into my music. Some of the tunes I wrote at that time were awful, but that process was absolutely necessary to get me to where I wanted to go musically. I got involved in playing in my youth group at church which was really helpful in honing my skills for playing on stage. Over the years I continued to write and play music anywhere I could (coffee shops, bars, etc…) It wasn’t until I was 28 that I decided to get serious and record all of the songs that I had been writing all those years. So in the fall of 2019, I released my first full-length record called “Lado De Loma”. The album is basically a compilation of tunes that I had written from 2008-2018. Then 2020 came and put the breaks on shows, but I continued to write and release music throughout the year and started playing shows again as soon as places opened up. I am currently back in the studio working on my next album, and I will release the first single from that record this summer.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
Definitely not. It took me quite a while to find my sound and learn how to write the tunes I wanted to write. There were a lot of mental hurdles to get over. Comparing myself to others really stunted my growth for a while. Then once I finally figured out who I was as an artist, it just happened to be at the busiest time of my life. Between family life, working a full-time job, maintaining relationships, and working on physical and mental health; all the while playing 2-3 shows a week and setting aside time to write and record, being an independent artist is no easy task. Not that I am complaining. I honestly love it, but it just takes a lot out of you. But that’s what it takes if you really want to do this as a profession. It’s like spinning plates. Not to mention all of the hours that you put in without any kind of assurance that it will “pay off” for you in the end. It’s there if you want it, but you have to truly WANT it.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m a songwriter. I love writing a tune and thinking about how it’s going to evolve in the studio or when I play it live. That whole process is very exciting to me. I’m not sure what I necessarily specialize in or what I’m known for, but I try to put as much honest emotion in my music as I possibly can; in both the writing and the performance. If the song is sad, I want people to feel that. If the song is full of energy, I want that to start on stage and make its way into each individual in the room. I want those that listen to my music and watch me play to feel what I am feeling. That is my goal, and hopefully, I am accomplishing that.
What are your plans for the future?
I am back in the studio right now, which is very exciting for me. I will be releasing a new single this summer, and hopefully another in the fall. I am still playing tons of local shows around town as well. I hope to get back out on the road as soon as I can. Not quite sure where I’ll go, but I just want to get out there playing for new crowds.
