Exploring Life & Business with Sara Malek Barney

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sara Malek Barney.

Hi Sara, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I am an Austin-native and University of Texas alum with degrees in Corporate Communication and Interior Design. My passion for design and real estate developed at a very young age but grew exponentially as time went on. Today, I believe that the design process should be highly collaborative and feel authentic to each individual.

Since the establishment of BANDD/DESIGN in 2017, we’ve successfully executed over 130 residential projects! Prior to launching BANDD, I spent the first phase of my professional career in Los Angeles, working in the fast-paced entertainment and sports industries as an executive at companies such as SXSW, Creative Artists Agency (CAA) and The Ellen DeGeneres Show.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
It’s mostly been a smooth road! But, like everyone, I’ve experienced a few bumps along the way. For me, the biggest struggle was the rapid growth we experienced, hiring when we needed to and making sure to deliver quality work at the end of the way.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about BANDD/DESIGN?
At BANDD/DESIGN, we believe that design should feel effortless, interesting, and purposeful. We’re based in Austin, Texas but we find inspiration from everywhere – our travels, art, fashion, culture and even our kids. What sets us apart from others is our dedication to ensuring your home is designed to be true to you and your family, reflecting your personality and what matters most. High-quality, approachable design is the driving force behind everything BANDD touches – It is truly our specialty.

BANDD/DEVELOPMENT was formed in 2021 from a growing love for renovating and building beautiful homes throughout the Austin area and nationwide. Brand-wise, this is one of the most exciting steps we’ve taken, and we are so excited to see where it takes us!

What’s next?
We have a ton of exciting plans lined up in the near future, especially through BANDD/DEVELOPMENT. My overall goal is to become a more well-rounded, full-service firm and potentially bring construction in-house.
