Life & Work with Blake Timmons

Today we’d like to introduce you to Blake Timmons.

Hi Blake, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I’ve been making art for as long as I can remember. Recreating anime characters and such as a youth, eventually, I grew to make my own creations.

I mostly did this as a hobby until in 2019 I got lucky enough to join Spratx ignite residency program. As a result, I learned the ins and outs of managing an art business and creating on a more serious level.

My first show was through them and the rest is history. Extremely grateful for them and the process.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It’s certainly not been smooth as most things aren’t unfortunately. With relationships, bills & mental health, all the day-to-day stuff that will get in the way of creating & progressing have been no stranger to me, haha.

I struggle with poor habits often. I waste time, wait till the last minute and lollygag. The biggest obstacle of them all that I face is myself on a daily basis.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I make art. Specifically illustration. Any pen, pencil, copic, micron, etc., is where I feel most comfortable. I also like making digital art as well.

I like to make more surrealist art with heavy line work. Dreamscapes with muted colors and usually with some specific feeling in mind.

What I’m most proud of is something I’ve never thought of. I guess I’m really proud of the intuitive nature of what I make. It really feels like it comes from the heart. This is not necessarily unique to me, but it really is fulfilling.

Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
100% — I owe the people over at Spratx so much. They got the ball rolling for me to see that there is a career path in this. Heath, Stephanie, Erk, Jay, Molly as well as Emmanuel for introducing me to the program.

Efren (@everydayresearch), Jeff Skele (@jeffskeleart) Gabriel (@_.Paste) Sadé (@Coslawson) and all the other full-time working artists are massive inspirations to me. Working as a professional artist breathing life into the city through art as they do is a level I hope to achieve.
