Today we’d like to introduce you to Keneisha Kay Jay Johnson.
Hi Keneisha, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I was born and raised in central Texas. I have been in Austin since I was seven years old however, my family roots are from Mississippi and Chicago. I’m a middle child. I have an older sister and a younger brother. My parents have been married for forty years. Growing up in the South Austin streets I would tend to find myself in some situations. Over the years, my situations got worst. I had some twists and turns in life that landed me up in a mental hospital and then eventually into the Texas prison system. I served fifteen months there. I can say now that those were the best fifteen months of my life. During that time, my life was transformed, and I fully surrendered to God. While I was incarcerated, God spoke to me and I answered the call. Now, after eight years of being back into society, I am doing the ministry that God has called me to do.
I am proud to say that I am the founder and CEO of Inside Out Prison Ministry, Rebels For Humanity, and Kingdom Music MFFK when I put it all together, I refer to it as the Kingdom Era. This walk has not been easy. There are still obstacles that come up but as God has protected and provided for me in the worst times, I know He will still do the same in my better times.
This entire ministry stemmed from my incarceration. This ministry is where it is today because of my obedience to God, dedication to those who are experiencing homeless and locked behind prison walls, as well as wanting to make a change in my community and beyond. Doing all this while showing the world the love of Jesus and how we should love one another. In hopes to bring lost souls to Him.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
This has not been a smooth road. The list of struggles that have come along the way is a pretty lengthy list. However, the one that I would have to say is at the top of that list is having the label of being a convicted felon. It seems to me that’s always the reason that someone doesn’t want to help. It is as if people don’t change. You’re accused and lied on about various things and because you already have a record and you’re labeled a felon the other person’s word trumps your word. Having solid support is another big struggle that I’ve dealt with. In my mind, I would think that people would want to support and help out organizations/ministries that are helping and trying to make a change in the community, but that doesn’t seem to be the case either. Could it go back to me being a felon? I don’t know but after being hurt by those who I felt should have supported the most God reminded that He is with me and when He is for me who can be against me.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
For my work in the world, I’m a chief. I’ve worked in the hospitality industry for over twelve years. I’ve worked front of house as a server for banquets, weddings, concerts, and any other special or private events you can think of. I’ve also worked back of house prepping and cooking the meals for these various events. I’ve done setups before the events and breakdowns after the events. So I know the ins and outs when it comes to the hospitality industry. But I would say my passion and specialty is most definitely in the kitchen. To be exact, on the grill or smoker.
For my work in the Kingdom of God, I’m a Christian Hip Hop (CHH) artist. I am most proud of this because God has given me a unique and special gift in music. I rap the Scriptures’ from the Bible. Being authentic sets me apart from others. I don’t do it for money or fame I just do it to bring glory to Jesus name. My style is still very street but you can’t catch no souls in the hood rocking a suit or a skirt. Knowing that God looks at the inter appearance, I never try to looking pleasing to humanity and I know that’s another thing that sets me apart from others.
What makes you happy?
What makes me happy is being with my family especially my grandmother. I have seven true friends that I have been down for me through it all. I love to be with my G6s, Courtney, Latrice, Tiffany, Ashlee, and Jessica, my Ace Yvette, and my guy bestfriend Devo. Being with my extended family brings me much joy. All my brothers and sisters locked behind the walls that are in the Inside Out Prison Ministry family. Hanging out with my brother Ghost who I met while he was homeless on the streets. All these people bring me happiness, peace, love, and joy. The core to my happiness is being able to serve others and allow the Light of Jesus to shine in all that I do.
