Today we’d like to introduce you to Marissa Servantez.
Hi Marissa, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for sharing your story with us – to start, maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers.
I grew up in Austin, TX and have always loved drawing and creating things my whole life. All the way through high school I took every art elective I could and when I got to college, I wanted to find a major that let me be just as creative. My mother actually got me down the right path to being a designer. But originally, I was an Interior Design Major before listening to her and finding my people within the Communication Design Program at Texas State. It took me a couple of tries to be accepted into the program, but ever since then I’ve loved everything I’ve gotten to create and thank my mother that I listened to her.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been smooth?
When I first didn’t get into the Design Program at Texas State, I thought that was it. I couldn’t be a designer. I had to change my major. It seems like such a little thing now, but it’s something I always reflect on when something challenging comes my way because when I got my second chance, that, of course, got me to where I am today, and I constantly want to prove to myself that I can do it. Not to say it’s been a smooth road since then, but I have learned so much along the way with each obstacle, big or small. When I started at PREACHER, there were so many things I still didn’t know about, stuff they don’t teach you in school. Even small things like Photoshop tricks save me so much time, and everyone at PREACHER was and still is amazing about showing, teaching, and explaining new things.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I get to do many different things as a Designer at PREACHER, and I love that. I could be making an illustration one morning, then making a billboard ad the next, and laying out a book that afternoon. Even the smallest projects can be amazing and fun to work on. My favorite project so far is everything we just did for Austin City Limits Festival. Being born and raised in Austin, it was an honor to be a part of it and it’s been amazing to watch it still come to life across the city.
Can you talk to us about happiness and what makes you happy?
So many little things bring me joy and happiness because all those little things add up, and they matter just as much as the big ones. My dogs sliding off the bed every morning, the different birds I watch as I drink my morning coffee, someone who held the door for me at the grocery store, my niece randomly giving me the ‘im watching you’ hand gesture, when the donkey I feed is screaming with joy to see us even though he’s 50 acres away, when I then end up covered in slobber after feeding those donkeys and cows, when that breakfast taco just really hits the spot, etc., etc. I could go on and on but I enjoy all those little things and more and they bring me so much happiness every day.
