Today we’d like to introduce you to Alice Arterberry.
Hi Alice, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
My interest in architecture and design began when I was a young child living in New England. I built my first project when I was 8 years old, which was a cage for my turtle using materials and lumber I found around the house. As a freshman at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, I decided that architecture was something that I wanted to pursue as a profession. I started my professional career working on public sector projects including; schools, community centers, parks and libraries. I met my business partner Barrett Cooke (who heads up our Southern California division) when we collaborated on a project and decided to start our own firm. We offer comprehensive design and architecture services from construction administration, permitting, and project management to landscape design, interior design, material selection and everything in between. We work on new build homes, gut renovations, and interior design projects.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It’s been an exciting road full of many bumps along the way! Of course, the challenges are, in part, what makes the work so meaningful. Some of those bumps include: long hours and time away from family, work-life balance, scaling the business without losing the personalization and high touch of a small firm, and managing client expectations on budgets and schedules in a time of great uncertainty. However, the incredible relationships that have formed along the way, with our team and clients, and the transformations and value that we create, is the best reward.
We’ve been impressed with Arterberry Cooke, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?

Who else deserves credit in your story?
In Austin, we partner with Builder Danny Spears of Captex Construction, whose model is based on quality, value and speed. His unique approach to construction sets him apart from any other custom/luxury home builders in Austin. The collaboration between the builder, architect, and client is very important as we work cohesively together. Danny is an incredibly talented builder and highly skilled in complex topographical conditions, in-house construction project management, and has experience in high-rise concrete construction. His quality of work has led us to many successful partnerships and beautiful custom homes for happy clients.
