Daily Inspiration: Meet Eli Halpern

Today we’d like to introduce you to Eli Halpern.

Hi Eli, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I have been a lifelong supporter of health and sustainability, and I’ve tried some interesting cuisines while traveling the world. About 7 years ago, I tried a barbecued scorpion in Thailand and it was actually delicious. After doing some research and discovering that insects were the most nutritious and sustainable source of protein on the planet, I had confirmed with myself that there is no good reason why insects shouldn’t be part of our diet. This belief lay dormant in the back of my mind until I moved to Austin and realized I could build a company that could also benefit the community. I figured eating straight up crickets would be a hard to sell, even for myself, but if I made them into a protein bar, it would be more palatable for everyone. We currently have one flavor – peanut butter chocolate banana. We have already sold over 4000 bars!

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
Not even close. Honestly, I would say the biggest pain is slow Wi-Fi/cell service, or web pages not loading. I don’t remember technology being this slow growing up. Also, manufacturers take forever. But the work I am directly responsible for is very fulfilling.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I have also been a lifelong artist and musician. I am most proud of doing stand up comedy because I love spreading laughter.

Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
I love everything about Austin. The people, the proximity, the food, the entrepreneurial/artistic spirit. The only thing I dislike is that it’s so amazing I immediately miss it anytime I leave town.

Pricing:

  • Box of 12 cricket bars $45
