Today we’d like to introduce you to Jean Jones.
Thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I love, love, love designing and making clothes. I learned to sew when I was young, and I learned handweaving when I was in college. I got my start in my professional life designing and making handwoven accessories, then I circled back to designing and making clothing as well. The fashion space that lives between designing and making is where I find myself.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
Like everyone, I’ve had my challenges. The fashion business is a tough one, so I’ve had to learn how to do it my own way. For example, I’m too small to produce seasonal collections that are brand new, and then, before you know it, out of date and gone. I’ve learned my customers don’t really like that either. So now, I design and produce my clothes as part of one big Collection that sticks around. It’s eternal, and it’s true slow fashion.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am proud of the clothes that I design. They are not trendy…they are stylish clothes that are made to last. One of my favorite things to design are high-waisted, classic women’s trousers, which I’ve been designing and making off and on for about 15 years at this point. This classic women’s trouser is an essential part of my brand.
What were you like growing up?
I was a happy kid growing up. I grew up in a family of storytellers, so there was always humor at every turn. And I was always making things, too. I was the one who could cut out a box from a flat piece of paper or sit and wrap presents for hours at a time, all while laughing and telling a story at the same time. Creating the brand of Jean Jones is a natural extension from that beginning point.
